Head work, Skim and simple porting.

Postby nedski » Sun Jan 19, 2014 1:55 am

I have two Mk1 1.8's that i've been volunteered to get more power from.
Both are getting some head work. This will be my first mx5 head attempt although I've done others.
I'll give a quick list of what we are planning on doing.

1, Georges Orange track car. 1.8 mk1

40 thou head skim. Simple porting to match up inlet and exhaust manifolds. removal of casting marks and anything obvious that might limit flow.
Exhaust intake cam swap ( run 2 exhaust cams)
Skuzzle chipped ECU
De cat
Cold Air intake
K&N Pannel filter inside standard air filter box.
14-16 deg timing mod

2, Brothers green road/track 1.8 mk1

Same again for the head, 40 thou head skim. Simple porting to match inlet and exhaust manifolds to the head. Removal of casting marks and anything obvious that might limit flow.
Swap Time. This one has two exhaust cams and the Skuzzle ECU (kindly getting donated into georges orange car). The two cams from the orange car are getting a blink motorsport Piper cam re-grind and are going into this one.
This car is also getting a Blink Megasquirt setup for the Piper Cams (rolling road to follow)

So i'll keep posting photo's as we go along over the next month or so. Get you :coffee: and i'll keep it simple and mostly picture based.
Orange car first and also the first one in my new garage at home. It's only taken a year and a half to build.

Image

Here we go it's easy to take things appart.
Image

Radiator out First and Air con in the bin.
Image

Rads out and aircon is off.
Image

Alternator belt, plug leads, coil pack, daft air horns off.
Image

Injectors, inlet manifold off.
Image

Image

Timing marks
Image
Image

Ok some people don't do this but needs must. Need the bottom pulley off to replace the oil seal, if your doing a cam belt this doesn't need to come undone. Anyway quick way to crack the big crank bolt if you don't have a locking tool to hand. As you can see rest a breaker bar on the passenger chassis leg and give the starter a quick flick. Mostly this works but it's not an ideal way to do it.
Image

Scratched a line in the CAS so it can easily be fitted back to the same place. Although the timing will be set with a timing light.
Image

Cams are out
Image

And hurray the heads off. Lucky i had a cheap socket set at home for the splined cylinder head bolts.
Image

there is a fair bit of blowby past the cylinders by the looks. The cleaner area of piston top is where gasses blow past the rings and clean that area.
Image

Image

No fancy tools so far just sockets pliers and spanners at home.
Image

My 16 year old did most of the work while i watched on drinking tea. :handgestures-thumbup:
More to follow soon.

Sunday and my Brothers car dropped off for his head work. No rest is there !

Head off again.
Image

Image

Image

This photo has the head George just removed on the left and a spare head with a 40 thou skim ready for porting on the right.
Image

intersting photo's These show the rough cast of the ports. Amazing how rough they are and all the sand it was cast with can be seen, very gritty. Also the rough casting joint. None of this is good for air flow so says simple common sense :-D
Image

Same thing ports with sides as rough as hell. Also a huge lip just under the valve seat. I think a profesional may fill that ridge under the seat. But i'm not confident to fill inside a port. I wouldn't wan't it to come loose and be eaten by the engine.
Image

this photo shows How the Cylinder head port is smaller than the exhaust. In fact the screw driver points to how the head is smaller than the gasket. The black ring is actually how much bigger the exhaust is still.
Image

And the heads lined up ready for working on.
Image

Enough for today.
Image

And yeh I rely on the mrs for brews :coffee:

Nice work so far... :-)

I do hope you find the blocks are straight after skimming the heads!

They better be.

Do you know something I don't. Are they prone to warping?
I think I've only skimmed 1 iron block in 25 years. I'm 99% sure they will be fine, as headgaskets were perfect when the heads were removed. But I'll double check. :handgestures-thumbup:

If it was an alloy block with sleeves then yeh can be trouble, especially bloody Rovers!

No, no reason, just have personally given a head some TLC to find that it no longer fitted the block! That was out of a Stag though, so a whole other kettle of fish.
