longer knob

Postby johnik » Sat Aug 30, 2014 2:16 pm

gear knob that is,my gear change was always hard work and i wanted a bit more leverage but keeping the standard gear knob so to keep it simple and free i removed the knob, screwed a self tapper into the knob where it screws onto the lever.
result is a gear lever about 1 inch longer. it really makes a difference and cost absolutley nothing. :auto-layrubber:

Great idea but there shouldn't be anything stressful about changing gear in an MX5, they're famed for their slick and snappy boxes!

I wonder if your turret oil needs renewing or the bottom bush is knackered? I had this with my car when I first bought it, coupled with fresh oil and the gearbox is silky smooth at 170,000 miles!

But, if it's working!

Self tapper  are you sure it is safe??
Yes i get the FREE bit big time, but sometimes a few £'s spent makes a big difference in it being right and safe.

I've got a horrible feeling if you're forcing in to gear that mechanically something is wrong and a replacement gearbox will outweigh the free self-tapper.

Not having a go, if it works for you that's great but you've got the symptoms of a common and easily remedied fault, adding more leverage isn't a sensible solution. You should be able to flick the lever backwards and forwards with thumb and finger.

I think you've got the common failed bush and filthy or non-existent turret oil issue, which is a doddle to fix.

As it's stiffens will you stick longer screw in?

Personally i would check the slave is not on it's way out, common fault for the use that little unit gets.
