Painting Engine Alloy bits

Postby GlennyGills » Tue Feb 17, 2015 1:55 pm

Hi, I originally painted my Cam cover in Black, but now I want to change it to Blue and I would like to do the Intake Manifold too. What is involved in removing the Intake manifold, are there anythings to be wary of ?
I can get a bare manifold from Atuolink and was looking to paint that then put it on the car. I am a bit wary of injectors, give me a carb any day.

Also looking for a 1.8 Cam cover, so I can paint and then do a simple swap, any ideas where to get one, usual suspects don't seem to have a 1.8 .

Once it is off the roadster is all simple enough, just make sure you do not loose the seal rings for the injectors and you will need a new gasket for the throttle body, make sure you block everything up for painting, also get two pieces of old fuel line rubber hoses and two clamps for when you disconnect the the hoses from the fuel pipes, and keep a swear box handy when unbolting it from the engine :handgestures-thumbup: :coffee:

Post 5 pic number 4 and you can just make out the rubber pipesand clamps to stop any fuel....

Cheap enough to buy and will come in dead handy for other jobs around the roadster, search the bay of E and you will find them cheaper..

Thanks Wayne,
Any recommendations on which paint to use. I used Halfords heat resistant paint and the laquer has all but gone. No shine anymore

Glennygills as said it's down to personal choice on finish but if the rocker is already painted it will just need keying up for paint prep, any paint can be used as I've just got normal solvent base coat on mine along with standard car lacquer and I've not had any problems
You could take it to a car body shop like myself and have one painted for around 40 again depend if you like fettling or not

I had mine powder coated in yellow. Can't say how much it cost as I had loads done at the same time. You can see them on my build thread. If I was painting them I agree with M-m and would go for crinkle.

Depends on how good a finish you want I guess but heat should not be a problem with most paints.

These are simple smooth hamerite from an aerosol.

Found this old photo that is a base coat and lacquer . The shine is better and does last longer.
