Couple of air-con questions

Postby Ricolas » Tue Jan 31, 2017 7:26 pm

Evening all.

A buddy has a mk1 import that is in decent bodywork condition, but the engine is a bit tricky.

Here is the question: the aircon unit under the bonnet has been removed. The heating still works and the blowers etc, but the compressor is still there, as is the extra fan.

Can you remove the compressor and fit an smaller belt? My own mk1 has got power steering but no air-con.

NB main reason for asking is that there is a bit of a squeal coming from that side of the engine, and before doing anything else I was wondering whether I can ditch the compressor.

I seem to recall reading a topic on the subject of removing the air con from a Mk1 some time back, almost sure they removed the compressor in the process.

All the wiring and plugs should be in place for plug and play...it is fiddly but can be done..

I visited a so called local air con expert with our 91 Eunos as the air con is not working as it did a while back.

He gave me loads of twaddle about he cant use the old system as is because the fluid they now use doesn't mix with the old, then he went on about the connections on our car need to be changed, and this and that, o as we don't use the sir con that often drove away.

We did look on line for a refill kit but didn't get any where, will no doubt start thinking about it when the heat of summer is upon us.

I did post up on this subject a while back and had some useful replies, see if I can dig it out.

Original Post if it helps.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Called in to a local air con re-gassing company yesterday to arrange to have our everyday cars air cons re-gassed (Ford and VW) and while I was there I asked about doing the Eunos at the same time as its air con is not cooling as it did last year.

The geezer scratted his head for a while before saying something about it being a R32 product that he can not supply.

So a techy question - errrr what is he on about??

Ta much :confusion-confused:

Load of crap, and should know his stuff, early cars can be converted to the R 314a and adapters fitted to the high and low for the future , later roadsters don't need the adapters, just the new oil/gas, jsut get a kit off the bay of E and do it yourself, I would not have faith in him.

So perhaps the more informed will tell you in more detail about your re gas issue for a 1995.

You can get the conversion kit and oil/gas off the bay of E...the adapters just screw straight onto the high and low (in and out) that are already on the pipes.
