Hi,
I've obtained a triple gauge mounting bracket from MX5 parts in Portsmouth to replace the cubby box and I would appreciate any advice regarding the removal of the cubby box and also the fitting of an electrical water temperature, oil pressure and ammeter/voltmeter. I have previously replaced the single din radio so I can access the top of the cubby box. Is it just a matter of pushing it out of the dash and if not how is it secured?
Where would the adapter for the water temp. gauge be placed in the coolant system? The top hose between the thermostat and the top of the radiator or the small pipe feeding the heater matrix? The oil pressure gauge also has a sensor that has to be fitted without disabling the normal gauge as I believe this feeds info into the engine management unit as would the original water temp sensor. I wondered if it would be possible to use the oil drain plug hole and fit an adapter with sensor into where the drain plug went.
Not sure about the ammeter due to the long run of high current through the car from the battery. The option is to install a voltmeter and this will be the easiest of the three to fit. If anyone has carried out a similar job as this using these types of gauges and can give me a few pointers/advice as well as photo's that would be great. I will be able to obtain the gauges/adapters/ sensors ok from ebay or amazon or some other outlet on the internet.
Thanks for your help.

Re: Installing replacement gauges using triple hole gauge pa
Hello Wayne
Further to my previous I have opted for an oil filter sandwich plate that fits between the oil filter and block. This has take off points for the sensor/s enabling the installation of an oil pressure and or oil temperature gauge/s, so that hopefully will allow me to do a safe and neat job. The take off for the water temp gauge is via an adapter that will fit in the top radiator hose, this also has a take off point for the sensor. This top hose is 32mm internal Diameter and the adapter fits this dimension.
My only problem is finding a way through the engine bulkhead into the passenger compartment. I do not want to drill this but may have to and install a rubber grommet to protect the cables from the sensors. Only other option it would appear is to make a small slit in the rubber boot to the left of the VIN plate that allows a bunch of existing cables to come through the bulkhead. The wires could then feed through this slit.
One thing I do need help with is the provision of a 12V switched supply for the gauges, oil pressure, water temperature and voltmeter. Do you think it would be possible to pop the cigar lighter out and tap into the power wire feeding it? I believe that this item is live when the ignition switch is operated. I would fit an inline fuse but need to determine what size this should be. The illumination will have to be taken from the lighting circuit and any advice where best to tap this would be appreciated. A bit long winded but any help from anyone kind enough to respond would be much appreciated.

Illumination is easy, just tap into the other switch looms red with black chaser and red, or radio loom.
Feed wire from the engine bay through the grommet on the bulk head near the fuse box into the cab.
All other feeds can be found around the radio loom.

Re: Installing replacement gauges using triple hole gauge pa
Hi Wayne,
The photos in your last post are spot on. Just a couple of things though. In one of your pictures you talk about noting how the washers and nut go and about earthing. I understand that the small screw on the adapter enables you to earth the adapter and that the sensor screwed into the adapter so surely the whole unit is then earthed including the sensor. I can't see what difference the copper/alloy washer makes to the earthing. I was going to use PTFE tape around the thread of the sensor. Not doubting your expertise, it's just me being thick. Can you clarify using idiot speak for me?
thanks

Re: Installing replacement gauges using triple hole gauge pa
Hi wayne
I'm still shopping around for the gauges but will post a pic of the sensor/s when they arrive. The price of gauges seem to go from dirt cheap to mega expensive. Any recommendations? Above all I'm looking for accuracy. I've still got a yazaki ammeter (-60/+60) that I bought about 35 years ago, never used mainly due to lack of confidence in handling large current through car interior, I had a VW beetle (bug) at the time where the battery is located under the back seat and alternator/dynamo was right at the back of the car. What is your take on fitting an ammeter into a Eunos?
Chadz.

Re: Installing replacement gauges using triple hole gauge pa
Gauges are a personal choice, and range from £6>£100, most of the time it is down the how they look also and illuminate, if she is not boosted and standard then the most needed is a temp gauge that works rather than the OE dampered one, most want a clock, and i have a voltage gauge to keep an eye on the alternator and battery.

Re: Installing replacement gauges using triple hole gauge pa
As a follow up to my previous I now have the gauges and I have take a photo of them in the gauge panel that will fit in place of the cubby box. Also a photo of the sensor that came with the water temp. gauge.
I've included a copy of the instructions that suggest providing a switched 12v supply to all the gauges as the instruction sheet is the same for all the gauges. I was wondering if this is necessary for the water temp and oil pressure gauges. I realise that this is required for the voltmeter but what about the other two?
If I tap of the wiring coming from the fuse box near drivers leg are their any snags to look for when removing the two panels giving access? I have a manual that warns of the possibility of the air bag deploying if you tinker anywhere near the ignition switch (ouch!). It does however say that the negative lead on the battery should be disconnected before any electrical work takes place and this makes good sense.
I would prefer to tap off the 12V switched supply somewhere else if possible and the cigar lighter seems a likely candidate. What do you think?

Just adding a 3 gauge panel for an owner, most of the wires needed can be used from the HU loom par the wires that need to run to the engine for the sensors.

Re: Installing replacement gauges using triple hole gauge pa
Thanks Wayne,
I have already replaced the Bose system with a new head unit so I should have put two and two together. I managed to fit a small adapter loom to join the main loom to the new unit so that I did not have to cut and mess with the original wiring. With a small mod this worked a treat and only required me to swop a wire around to give power to the speakers. The sensors are straightforward other than getting the wires through the engine bulkhead. I have a sandwich plate to fit between the block and oil filter for the oil pressure gauge, just hope their is enough room to fit the sensor as it seems quite bulky. Will install this when I next do an oil change. Perhaps it might be a good idea if I posted a few pics of the sandwich plate and the sensor for others to look at, it may help in determining what is required.

Getting through the bulk head is easy..... i'll do a vid easier to run wires from the engine bay into the cab
Sandwich plate should not be a problem, what i will say use alloy or copper washers to seal the sensors so no leaks, don't put to much faith in ptfe thread tape.

Re: Installing replacement gauges using triple hole gauge pa
The sensors are NPT type with a tapered thread. I thought these were designed with a taper to ensure a good seal whether it be water or oil. Having gently screwed the sensors into both the sandwich plate for the oil and the adapter for the water temp they only seem to go down so far and do not look like they will compress a washer. As I said these were only finger tight but it didn't seem wise to force the taper where it was not designed to go. Never used a taper thread before. Can you advise if I am being too cautious in my estimation. Obviously I would use a spanner to take them down as far as they will go but it does seem as though you would be forcing a larger thread into a smaller diameter thread space.
The video idea would be a great help to anyone contemplating this type of modification.
