Lowering a 2.5 but keeping the standard shocks

Postby Stevo » Thu Apr 19, 2012 4:32 pm

I was considering swapping the coilovers from one car to another but have now decided just to lower the car instead.
I don`t want the car slammed as such, just lowered to improve it`s stance and allow the wheels to fill the wheel arches.
MX 5 parts sell springs but I am confused as to which ones to buy.
I wont be doing track days so I`m looking for budget springs for road use only.
Apparently I need to ensure they are rated for the car which leads me nicely to the following question WTF is that all about :?:

You can cut the springs down on a Mk 2 and 2.5, but a no go on a Mk 1, you would need to cut them all dead right, your alignment will need doing again anyway, but the cost for springs would be free, and your time.

Wayne re cutting Mk2 springs to lower ride height, from your experience how much and where on the coils to drop 30cm front & back ? , that was my next job to dowas going for either Eibach (Fnt 30cm, rear 37cm) or Tein (Fnt 30 cm, rear 33cm) but not much change out of £ 150 as opposed to £10 for hacksaw blades etc, B Rgds, Paul H.

please remember that if your spring is cut (I DO NOT condone this, sorry Wayne) it MUST maintain contact with the spring platforms at all times - eg when jacked up, or it's an MOT fail.

Unless they've changed MOT regs, which I doubt

edit: this is why http://automotivethinker.com/suspension/linear-vs-progressive-rate-springs/ 99.999999% of modern road vehicles use progressive springs :handgestures-thumbup:

Ben, thanks for reply, understood, just thought Wayne might have some demon trick regarding springs, I had just about settled on Eiback (had fitted new Sachs shocks all round with new standard road springs late last year - case of what I had available at time) so now back using car regularily (plus bit of hillclimbing & sprinting need to drop ride height just a touch (30cm ish) so am in process , will wait and see what Wayne comes back with, rgds, Paul H.
