Oil sandwich plate - trouble installing filter

Hi,

Thought I would open a new thread regarding the installation of an oil sandwich plate to my mk 2 Eunos roadster (1998). NB8C. I have just tried to fit the oil sandwich plate and new filter but this has proved impossible due to the manifold support bracket.
The dimensions are as follows: Oil filters length = 65mm, Sandwich plate thickness = 28mm. The diameter of the sandwich plate fitted nicely with the block and both 'O' rings seated very well. My problem is that the oil filter would not screw onto the spiggot as their was not enough room to get it square on to the adapter to enable it to be screwed into position. The Oil filter is quite small anyway and I doubt if their is a smaller version but I would be grateful if somebody could tell me of a smaller one.
I did make a modification to the spiggot adapter by cutting off about 12mm (see photo) as this still left plenty of thread to engage with the oil filter. This certainly helped but not quite enough. The annoying thing is these sandwich plates are and have been used successfully by many eunos roadster/Miata owners and I am baffled as to why I could not get my filter to fit. Could it be that the sandwich plate itself is too thick and needs to be machined back to a slimmer size without compromising the NPT ports. The side with the 'O' rings could not be touched I guess.
Can somebody who has fitted such a device let me know how they did it please, it really is annoying to get so far and then be stumped by such a small detail.

Update to the above. Have removed the inlet manifold brace and installed the oil sandwich plate and filter. I managed to reach from the top to undo the bottom bolt securing the manifold brace although it was very fiddly and you are working by touch only. I opted for this method because the plastic undertray looked to be a lengthy job with all the fasteners, most of which were rusted in place.
Glad to say that the sandwich plate and filter are leak free and I have now got to trim some of the material off the manifold brace to get it to fit around the filter and sandwich plate that is approximately 28mm further out than normal. Will run the sensor wire into the cab and then make the final connections to the gauge. Will post a picture of the modified brace when I have worked out where and how much needs to be trimmed.

As promised. Pictures of the inlet manifold brace before and after modification. Have not yet fitted it to the car 'cos rain stopped play but it should be somewhere near. If it needs some further modification I would estimate that it will be a very small amount. The excess material was taken out using just simple hand tools, electric drill with various bits and then files, nothing special. About 1.5 hours in total.

Here is the finished product (almost). I have fitted the modified inlet manifold brace and it 'just' clears the oil filter. Nowhere enough to enable me to screw the filter off. :angry-screaming: I've had enough for now so have decided to leave it 'till the next oil change and then modify it some more. Still, not a bad first attempt if I say so myself. At least the oil filter sandwich plate is in place and the sensor installed with new oil filter. The next hacking session should be a lot easier now I can be certain exactly where it needs reducing. Probably another 17mm to allow the oil filter to screw off the spiggot and clear the brace ready to lift out. Tried to take some photos to indicate just how close the brace is to the filter but even on macro it came out blurred. Got one showing the filter/sensor/brace so hope that gives would be installers a reasonable idea of what is involved, especially if you refer to my previous photos of the modified brace.
'He who fights and runs away lives to fight another day'. Ho Hum! Comments/questions please.

It is an adaptor that screws down solid to the engine block where the oil filter fixes, which if you like is a big thick washer that the oil filter can still be screwed down into, the adaptor has sensor threads so an oil temp sensor or pressure sensor etc. can be added for extra gauges in the cabin.

Hope that makes sense buddy.

Mine has similar. In my case it's an oil-filter relocation kit so there is a plate fitted where the filter should be with oil-lines off to a remote location on the inner-wing where an oil is fitted. Makes oil-changes much easier and less messy as it's fitted so that the filter hangs down rather than horizontal.
I actually also have a sandwich plate too but that is fitted between the filter and relocation block, this is to feed the oil to my oil-cooler.

I knew someone would say that :teasing-neener:

I'll take a few when I get a chance. They might not be very good though as it's hard to see any of it from above the engine.

It's basically the same as this though: Oil Filter Relocation Kit plus a sandwich plate.
