This is, as you will probably have already guessed, for a "proper" oil pressure and temperature gauge and either a replaceent clock or Oil temp gauge.

The problem I am having at the moment is finding a matching set. The clock is the most difficult as there seem to be few options. Stack do what I want but at £75.00 for a simple analogue clock? (don't ask about the VDO one :o )

If all else fails I will just fit an Oil temp and rely on the clock in the radio.

And yes MM I did spot the post on the dark side with the 32mm temp sensor housing -duly placed on watch list :)

Can I possibly pick your brains some more?

I think I would like to try to wire this up myself. I dont like car electrics but can solder. Anyway, my plan is this. The original digital clock obviously has a power supply and earth. Also, (I guess but will check) some way of illuminating. There are 5 wires for the digital clock going to a connector that plugs into the back of the clock. They are:

Black
White/red
Red/black
Blue/black
Blue/red

Image

The new, (old) BMW clock only has three wires. These are:

Brown - common earth
Red/yellow - Clock live
Grey/red - Light live

My plan is to "tin" the three wires on the new BMW clock and insert them into corresponding slots of the connector block of the digital clock

Image

My question is this. Do you know what each of the wires for the digital clock is? I would guess that black is earth?? But the others? Where could I look for this info?

Thanks again.

P.S.

I posted on the OC forum regarding removing the clock. I didnt get the comprehensive answers that you have given here. I did post up how I removed the digital clock and I also acknowledged the help that you gave me on this forum. Credit where credits due :D .

I found out the OEM digital wiring, (or rather my freind did with his multimeter) It is as follows:

Black = Earth
Grey/red = +ve from light dimmer
red/black = +ve light
Blue/black = +ve ignition
Blue/red = Permanant live

The bad news is that the BMW clock didnt run  I bought it through a car breaker on fleabay, so hopefully, he will have another one...

I fitted my clock today and am very pleased with how it turned out. I had tinned the tips of the leads so that they could be pushed into the digital clock block connector. It is wired to the dimming circit too.

I then taped it up using fire resistant tape.

Image

This is the clock installed. I put some 3M double sided tape along the top and side edges to secure it better. It obviously didnt come with the OEM clock plastic clips

Image

And finally, the finished job. It goes with the look I wanted for my car. The only downside is that the clock lights up in red while my gauges are currently green, but then, my radio lights up in blue, so...

Just been reading through some old posts. I think the information here is really clear, so much so that I am getting a clock - I think they look great.
