Supercharging 98NB 1.8iS with ABS & A/C

Postby Ebod » Wed Nov 25, 2015 9:57 am

Hi all, my first post here so please be gentle.

I'm a newbie to 5's and got one ( 98 NB 1.8iS ) as a toy/spare in September. I don't need it daily so can afford the time for it to be off-road , but don't have the £budget to throw at mods, so its just gradual stuff over the long term.

Its got a K&N typhoon kit on it, but otherwise mechanically standard. Its also got ABS & A/C occupying the bay.

I don't want a track monster, but being used to the shear grunt of 2.2ltr diesels, I am struggling to feel overwhelmed at the power of a 1.8ltr NB. I wouldn't do any major power mod without thoroughly beefing up the brakes & suspension/bushes, but this now brings me onto the subject of supercharging.

Yep I appreciate there are gazillions of forum posts out there and its easy to reply by pasting in loads of ‘read-this’ links. But unfortunately I feel I can’t see the wood for the trees as the context/reasoning for why individuals mod are very different, hence the advice I read may not be appropriate for me.

So…what I’m looking to establish is….is it possible to do a budget sensible supercharger installation without getting too carried away on intercooling / ECU mods / bigger injectors / exhaust etc etc.

Is it possible to just source a serviceable used supercharger and do a combination of DIY bracket /adapter making with only buying new bits that can’t be made easily.
Forums seem to throw up various brands of charger under the guise of sizes M45 & M62. The common donors seem to be Mini’s ( M45?) and Merc 1.8 Kompressor.
Is there a clear favourite that lends itself to an Mx-5 install easily?, especially with an A/C pulley and ABS module near the bulkhead.

What I’m aiming to establish is :-
- Whether simple charger only install is practical, or if essential to consider more kit. Would a target of ~190>200 horses be achievable?
- Most practical donor for the charger.
- Recommendations on sources / methods to mount/pipe up.
- Are there kit suppliers out there that exclude the charger and just supply the essentials based on a specific mass-made Mini or Merc donor unit ?

Cheers

Sorry Wayne, too cryptic ...lost me already.

Mortgage...marriage & 3kids seriously hamper playtime. I have to consider myself fortunate just to have a 5 as an extra car.
I'm just trying weed through all the examples of peeps chucking megabucks at their motors and seeing what can be achieved on a shoestring.
