Aftermarket Heated Seats

Postby Taxi_Driver » Thu Feb 18, 2016 11:33 pm

Hi all. I've decided to fit an aftermarket heated seat kit, namely the Weaco magic comfort MSH60. Has anyone else fitted one of these to an MX5 MK2? I've found a fair amount of info around the net which should see me ok for fitting the heater pads. I'm just looking for any advice on switch placement, and wiring, if anybody has any experience of these kits. Is it best to wire these direct to the battery with inline fuses? Or should I pick up a live feed from somewhere which is only live with the ignition on? Is there anywhere on the Loom of a MK2 specifically set aside for heated seats, and where would I tap into it?

I've just ordered the kit, so haven't seen any wiring diagrams yet. Just wanted to get some feedback from someone who's been there and done that.

Thanks.

Earth out to a good safe point on the body of the roadster and take a live for a ignition live with a in line fuse, the kit will not be that difficult to fit buddy.

Thanks for the link. But it takes me to an 83 page post.
Could you give me a clue as to which page it might be on?

With reference to a 'how to?'
I would recommend reading the following.
http://www.miata.net/garage/duetto_seat.html
Then using the following 'how to' to help fit the heater pads to the seats.
http://www.miata.net/garage/upholstery.html
As for the switch location? This means relocating the rear fog light switch on the MK2, from the panel on the center consul to the spare switch blank on the right of the steering wheel. I made up a short (about 30 inches long) extension for the harness containing 6 colour coded wires which replicated the wires currently used. 5 were for the rear fog light switch. I added 1 Orange wire to carry a live feed from the fusebox, using an 'add a circuit' (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Add-A-Circuit-F ... 1550063146). This is a low current circuit which connects directly to the relay included in the kit. The main power source was taken directly from the battery with an inline fuse at the battery. The circuit for the seats takes 7.5amps and is fused at 10amps. The wiring loom supplied fits quiet nicely under the center consul. The relay in the kit fits snugly between the ashtray and window switches. You just need to trim the carpet back and drill for a self tapping screw.
I was quiet surprised at how easy a job this was. It's the first time I've tried something like this. Getting the heating pads in the seats took about 3 hours for the first, and 30 minutes less for the second. The wireing took approx. 3 hours spread over 2 weeks. The most difficult part was getting the switches in place, and making the small plate they sit in. I had a small piece of 3mm thick black Perspex. I bought a 20mm hole cutter, which cut the holes very well, 22 mm apart. I then cut around them to make this a tight push fit into the switch aperture. Once cut out there's very little of the Perspex left. Once I'd got it in place I secured it with some epoxy. It's very tight for space there, but switch location is a personal choice. I hope this post is useful to someone in the future. Thanks to this site there's always help available if you do run into problems. I know I should have taken some pictures as the job progressed, but it didn't cross my mind till it was finished. Sorry.
