Mx5 1.8 euphonic oem fog lights

Postby Johnmx5euphonic » Fri Jul 06, 2018 9:49 pm

Hi all this is my first post, I have recently bought a 2004 dark grey metallic 1.8 euphonic. Really enjoying the car and working my way through the car fixing problems. So far I have had 4 new discs fitted, new front springs. The car is booked into body shop for new rear wings and rear inner quarter panels and rustproofing.Wheels being refurbed as well. I like the look of the front fog lights on the mx5. I have bought a used set of genuine Mazda fog lights on eBay they come with the brackets to fit and the wiri g connection coming from the rear. Has anyone retro fitted these to their car, was hoping to get a few pointers as to how to get them working, Thanks John

I think the loom needs adding, there is just the plastic vents where the fog lights go , so the car has never had foglights fitted. Thank you for taking the time to help.

I thought I had answered this perhaps it didn't go through, I don't think there is any wiring present, I haven't removed the front grills yet so it could be behind them, was just hoping for a heads up on how to do the installation. Thanks for replying

You need to check first to see if the connections are in place , if not i can tell you what to get that is not pocket emptying to get them all in and working.

This is the kit we use...... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ring-RLFK200 ... xyOJxSNbk3

And you will need a MK 1 rocker type fog light switch to fit in and do away with the one in the kit....

Hi MM.
I am about to complete this on my 1999 Mk2 10AE. I have a set to OEM lights, the Ring kit and a MK2 front fog light switch (that was the hardest part that I have ever tried to source!).
I'm fairly confident that I know what I am doing however I wonder if you can offer any advice on the cables that I need to tap into?
- What earth under the bonnet can I tap to for the front fogs?
- What sidelight cable under the dash can I tap into for the switch?
- Is there a live under the dash you can recommend also to save me running the relay back to the battery?

I am sure I can work it all out given time but I know you have done this a number of times with the Ring kit so am hoping to save some time and risk and lean on your experience.

Thanks
Nathan

Take the live from the fuse box in the engine bay on the drivers side...

Unbolt the fuse box from the bracket by way of the two 10mm nuts... On either side you will find flaps on the base that pop open... Pop the one nearest the wing open and you will find a main wire which is bolted down tight with a 10mm head bolt.....use this for your live put please make sure you pull the battery power before doing so... An earth can be taken from anywhere as the whole body is negative.
Then it is just a case of feed the switch wire through the main grommet while the fuse box is still in bolted as it is easier with it not bolted down....
As for the switch... It using a single.. It needs to be the rocker type not the later latch type.

Thanks MM. This is really useful! Appreciate the guidance!
I managed to source a OEM front MK2 fog light switch which turns out to be really rare. It is the rocker type as you say.
The instructions show a side light tap too to the relay. Presumably this is prevent the fogs being turned on without the side lights being turned on first.
Any idea which cable I can tap for this? If not I'll dig out a wiring/fuse diagram.

The choice is yours really on how you want them to operate... If you have a simple spike and earth tester you can find the live you wish from that main fuse box to tap into... But please don't use scotch snap clip joiners.

Thanks again. Its has been many years since I last did any automotive electrics. I'll likely be using bullet connectors and heat shrink if I need to tap into any cables, especially if the tap is not in the cabin, but have used snap clip joiners in the past. Why do you not recommend these?

Hi M-M. I made some good progress today, got the switch cable through the firewall and wired the switch. Found the switched feed on the TNS relay and did a test tap to the relay and proved that I have the correct cables. However I am a little unsure about the constant live via the fuse box. I unbolted my fuse box but found no flaps on the base. On the side of the fuse box closest to the wing there is a flap and behind it is a black cable bolted down with a 10mm bolt. I hooked up my tested but only got a few volts from it. Is this the correct live? Do you have a picture of the main wire you refer to above?

Thanks

Try the other side of the fuse box, there is another flap.
