DRLs
I've been thinking about DRLs for awhile and having seen some on another MK2.5 under the number plate and how bright they are, decided to look into it further.
I wanted something that looked fairly standard fit and found some interesting replacement foglights units.
I have just ordered what I think is the ideal solution! :)
OSRAM DRL/Foglights
Having looked at the application sheet, although it doesnt mention MX5's specifically, they fit the Picasso and a few other shared foglight fits, so confident they will go straight in.
Foglight wiring looks plug and play, so will just need to work out the DRLs.

Will do. Expecting delivery tomorrow but away this weekend, so hopefully one after if it's dry!

Where have you got them from? And if you don't mind saying - how much were they?

Re: DRLs
Did a bit of searching around and they were coming in at £300. Then found a post on an Audi A2 forum that had a link to Amazon seller for £250.

Re: DRLs
Also just noticed, (thanks Lazza), that they have Corner Assistance setting.
A wire is connected to front indicators on each side, so when you turn left or right, (and indicate of course), the foglight on that side comes on.
Seen this on recent Mercs & Beemers.

Re: DRLs
I thought DRLs were supposed to switch OFF on the side that you're indicating, so others are more able to see the indicator...?
I also think that 99.999% of aftermarket DRLs look pitifully bad, over-bright and tacky. About 90% of factory-fit ones do too...it's yet another motoring fashion that will have been ruined by cheapo knockoffs on every saxo and corsa in every maccy d's carpark in the land.

If the DRL is in the same light cluster as the indicator, then yes, I have seen OEM ones dim.
As these ones are going in the foglight holes much lower down, I don't see them being a problem with indicator visibility.
As to the look, some of them do look awful be they aftermarket ebay jobbies on Corsas or OEM ones like the verticals on the Citroen C3.
Everyone has there own tastes though, and life would be boring if we didn't do our own thing.
All i need to do now is find an accessory live in the engine bay. Any suggestions for a mk2.5?

Re: DRLs
Bit of an update on these DRLs.
Although they are listed as compatible with Picasso, (which are direct mk2.5 replacements), they are different size.
The lenses are too big to go through the apertures so the brackets sit much further back, but only 2 holes line up anyway.
Did think about dremeling the apertures so they could push through, but then can't retro fit the original fogs if needed and the sides of the light units are black, so wouldn't look very good.
Thinking of getting some extender brackets made up, using the stuff radio are mounted with, (like Meccano).
Next issue. The adaptor that plugs into one of the foglight harnesses has the two pins vertically whilst the foglight harness in the car is horizontal. Probably have to splice or vampire clamp into this.
Weather has turned bad now, so everything on hold.

Re: DRLs
Ok M-M, just for you.
Here's the box they come in.
Unpacking
The Lights
The Manual & fixings
The Wiring Diagram
The Foglight plug. (Note the terminals the wrong way round)
As previously mentioned, the brackets on the DRLs are quite far back, and the lights don't fit through the apertures, so I bought some brackets from Halfords
Having bent them to shape, they fitted nicely in the bumper.
Note there are 3 screws and 1 locating pin. (top left). This made it awkward to flush fit the light
Brute force and ignorance!
The lamps were bolted to these brackets using some 5mm nuts and bolts.
I fitted the drivers side lamp first, to see how long the lead was, so I could get an idea of where I could install the control unit.
Managed to feed the cable and plug up behind the wheel arch liner near the headlamp, and then feed it across.
Had to undo the headlamp and the chrome panel across the top of the nose cone, to run the cable across, away from any heat source.
With this cable in place, coming into the left hand wing by the power steering reservoir, I worked out I could bolt the control box on the wing, near the diagnostics port. (luckily there is a small hole there, so I pushed a 5mm bolt through and fixed in place)
Had to run the green cable to the driver side Indicator and the grey wire to the nearside wing indicator as the wire was close.
As I have illuminated side markers, I ran the white lead down with the foglight plug to the nearside front side marker.
The black & brown leads need to go to an earth point, so I bolted these to the bracket on the bulkhead for the alarm horn.
Final two leads were red & blue, Permanent live and accessory switched live. In the corner of the nearside bulkhead is a large rubber grommet,
so punched a hole through with a really long screwdriver, from the inside.
wrapped some insulation tape around the screwdriver and taped these two wires to it, then pulled them through.
Finally vampire clamped them to a couple of suitable wires, and all finished.
Corner assist light, (Foglight comes on when lights are on and indicating)
Foglights
DRLs
Close up of DRL
It started getting dark, so I will take more photos later of the control unit etc.
When I locked the car up this eve, the DRLs flash twice with the indicators, (once when unlocking).
Was quite surprised how bright the DRLs are in the dark when first turning the ignition on, then they turn off once the lights are on.
So far, very pleased with the final result, but I may have to tinker with the brackets.

Hmmm... On my Mini, if I leave the headlights on when I take the keys out they stay on for 10 seconds then turn off automatically. That's one of those niceties they added to help you find your way to your front door in the dark. I wonder if BP would make up a small box of tricks to do something similar for this. i.e. when the keys are removed, turn on the DRLs for 10 seconds

Have a similar feature on the 100HP & 500.
When you take the keys out, flash the full beam and it comes up with 10secs, do it again and it keeps incrementing in 10's.
Never really used it though as my neighbours probably don't need their house lit up when I reverse on
