E10 Petrol: The Myths and The Facts So Far

Postby Mazda Mender » Thu Mar 11, 2021 9:27 pm

E10 Petrol: The Myths and The Facts So Far....

As I’m sure many of you have heard by now, a new type of petrol will be made the standard across the UK come September this year. As a result of this, many pieces of right and wrong information have been circulating in all online spheres of influence for a while now. Therefore, we are writing this to put straight a lot of the myths surrounding this new petrol, as well confirm some of the facts. However, before we begin. For those of you who may not be aware, we will start by briefing you all on just what is happening.

Come September 2021, the UK Government has decided to move to a new type of petrol called E10. All E10 means is Ethanol 10%. Which means the amount of Ethanol content in the petrol is allowed to be up to 10%. Currently, the standard is E5, so, Ethanol content up to 5%. E5 is fine for use on almost all engines designed to run on unleaded, however on older vehicles it is preferred to try and use petrol with as little Ethanol content as possible. Meaning anything graded “super” like “super unleaded” or Tesco’s Momentum 99, or preferably (in our opinion), Shell’s V-Power (due to the cleaning additives found in the petrol, but that’s another topic entirely).

The reason the Government wants to move to this new fuel, which France, Finland, Germany and Belgium have had for a while, as well the US, is because it’s actually bioethanol. Which is insanely renewable and more “green”. It is also supposed to help lower emissions from cars running this fuel. Due to the ethanol in the mixture, the exhausted gases contain less pollutants. So it’s a wonder fuel right? Yes and no. Despite its environmental benefits. The cost of it is marginally higher, and the energy potential it contains is lower, meaning less smiles per gallon. The following is an extract from the Express who wrote this article in 2020:....https://www.express.co.uk/life-style/ca ... oad-safety
“Analysis revealed moving from the fuel would reduce pump price costs by 0.2 pence per litre.
But the energy content of fuel will decrease meaning road users will need to buy more litres of fuel.
This means overall fuel costs would increase by a total of 1.6 percent as a result of switching from E5 to E10 petrol.”

This new fuel is reported to be damaging and incompatible with around 600,000 vehicles on UK roads. Though the number could easily be into the millions. Are claims made by the Express. However, the Express and other publications, like this article from AutoExpress .... https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/1041 ... eptember(I promise I don’t like the word express that much) say that the Government has said it will maintain the supply of E5 petrol for 5 years. However, only larger stations may be equipped to stock it, and it may mean only 1 E5 pump. That being said, super graded fuels, like the ones aforementioned, should still be perfectly fine for use even after the 5 years E5 has left.

Now that we understand just what E10 means. Let’s start looking into the rumours and speculations. I will aim to cite as many credible sources as possible for my information, so please do check them out yourself/do your own research, in order to gain the full truth. I do not claim to be an expert on this subject, and it is always possible I have missed something, or something changes. As a result of that, please only use this article.... as the start of your research/understanding.

Now then, let’s begin. I guess we should start with the biggie.

Q: Is this fuel bad for my car?
A: Well, that depends. Officially, anything built after 2011 should be okay. That being said, most cars 2002 onwards are perfectly fine with this petrol. And, according to this document PDF.... by the ACEA (European Automobile Manufactures Association – which doesn’t make any sense but whatever), any Subaru from 1991 onwards is perfectly fine.

Let’s stick Mazda’s though, namely MX5’s/Eunos’s/Roadsters. In the article I linked from AutoExpress they said:
“Previous research by the RAC Foundation indicated 28,000 Volkswagen Golfs, 18,162 Mazda MX-5s and almost 16,000 Nissan Micras in the UK are unable to run on E10.”
If you have a UK or JP spec MK1. Your car will NOT run on this new E10 petrol. The engine just wasn’t designed for it. If you run it then here is what damage it could cause:
The fuel tank will begin to rust away (and they’re a nightmare to change),
The fuel lines will rot,
The fuel filter will clog and fail
The fuel pump may fail,
Fuel injectors may fail,
The engine will run hotter, meaning more prone to overheating, which as you will know, overheating these engines, which naturally run hot (my own MK1, according to aftermarket temperature gauges – a mod you should all have – runs to 98 degrees before cooling itself) could cause significant warping to the aluminium head,
Due to the evaporative qualities of Ethanol, it is also possible that the innards of your engine could begin to rust.
There may be more issues this fuel could cause. Though as of right now, those are the ones I’m aware of. More information could be gained by any of you with close ties to people with these cars in any of the countries I mentioned near the start of this article. Since they’ve been living with it.

Owners of UK or JP spec MK2’s (not 2.5’s) are also most likely in the same boat as MK1 owners. MK2.5 owners may scrape by on E10, however, I would personally brand you guys as also having the same issue as MK1 and MK2 owners. MK3/3.5/3.75 owners are most likely okay. MK4 owners needn’t worry. But please try to ascertain this information in the coming months. Since as of right now, there is no answer for you MK3/3.5/3.75 owners. Or at least, I couldn’t find any. The same applies really to all of us par the MK1 community. Given the similarities between the MK1, MK2 and MK2.5 engine wise. I am confident in saying all of these models are affected by E10. Though VVT models may be unaffected. On that I cannot say for sure. However, I would advise you all, part MK4 owners, to try to avoid E10. MK1/2 owners, avoid forever. 1.8 MK2.5’s, avoid until there is information available. MK3/3.5/3.75 owners, avoid until information is available.

All that being said. Please consult the ACEA’s PDF...
ACEA_E10_compatibility.pdf
(167.88 KiB) Downloaded 200 times
(that I linked above) for more accurate advice on other vehicles you may own. Failing that, as many publications suggest, it is always good to attempt to get information from the manufacturer where possible.

I believe this should cover most the uncertainty around E10. Even with just one question. The rest have been answered in the details about E10. However, should you have any more. Please get in touch, but before you do, check out the following links that were helpful to me in understanding E10 and with the creation of this article:

Great article and helpful but ultimately we Mk1,2,2.5 oowners are going to be faced with some big decisions in five years time when they plan to withdraw the sale of super E5 fuel.

The argument about a greener fuel doesn't entirely stand up, more like the Gov gave millions of tax payers money to a number of company's to build bio ethanol plants, most of which shut down as there wasnt the demand for what they were producing.

The biggest contributor and threat to global warming is the over population of energy hungry human beings.

Soap box put away but I might have to get it out again and put some wheels on it when they ban all internal combustion engines.

Wayne - I was pointed to this "similar" article with a different outcome for Mk1's any comments/ thoughts. I will be sticking with E5 for a while.

Interesting article.

Might be use E10 in your NA and NBs and when they break down, we can fix it for you , that's me being sceptical, or perhaps theres some truth in it.

But like you, untill I know a whole lot more about E10 and its suitability for our 1991 Eunos, I will be paying the extra and running on super E5.

Be interested to hear from any of our European or American members, if we have them, on thier experiences of running older MX5s on E10 or even members who have toured Europe in thier NAs and NBs and of any niggles as a result.

Just stick with momentum or V power as it should of been even before this change happened.
The long term effects to our cars is not good on E10 fuel...you will not see it straight away as it starts to attack the metal etc.

That article is mis information which is a shock from a Co that deals with these roadsters , the only thing the mk 2/2.5's have that is different is plastic fuel lines that will not rot...that does not wave a flag of "it's ok for that model" everything else in the system will be 100%.the only model I would be kind of ok with would be the MK4...but my advice is never to run these on crap fuel any way, it will never do them any favours, super market fuel is cheap for a reason, use it at your own risk, as said momentum or V power, that's it really, shocked at mx5 city on this.

I put my na back on the road this week for the summer, as that's what I do. I ran her on E10 at the end of last summer. Having read this section, I filled her with E5 on Saturday before bringing it back from storage in Wales, to Manchester.
After 30 minutes on the motorway, she was running like a rocket compared with last year.
So E5 it will be from now on.
Looking forward to a tour of Northern Ireland in her in June.

They will and do run completely different on the E10 compared to E5 , always where possible fill up with premium, and more so V power or momentum, if you have no choice E10 will get you home , and as soon as the tank is empty asap, don't leave it sat in the tank and system for to long a length of time, it will rot stuff out...
I am shocked that there is no proper kit out to convert yet now...
Plastic fuel tank ,pump, lines ,injectors etc...as this fuel and worse as been on the forecourts in the US for a long time, and the Miata scene is big.
I keep getting asked if I am worried about the stop on production of petrol cars looming...not really, the petrol is still going to be made they have said that, plus there is always some bright spark working on an alternative somewhere already , Porsche have started on something, there will be many more to come, we have been here before with leaded fuel to uneaded, Diesel etc ,so nothing new to the greedy benefiting off us as the norm.
When they tried to kill off all the lead cars , aftermarket Co's jumped in with additives and conversions, to save everyone selling or scrapping their classics for new cars.
Then the push on the wonder fuel diesel, cheaper and more miles to the gallon, to entice you to sell the orrid petrol car , diesel is terrible stuff for emissions hence the big Co's doctoring Thier ECU',s on usage that all got found out, until the diesel became dearer than petrol but still had get more miles, now the Ethanol fuels...and the push for electric cars ,which are being pushed as the way to save the planet, how gullible are people with advertising and b*llshit...it's all about money ,taking ours..
The biggest laugh for me personally was from those that were taken in and argue how great they are at the beginning that they were "free to use" compared to our dirty burners....my reply was always for the minute with your limited miles of use, the electric will go up because they will not lose out and as with everything we pay because they have us by the balls for necessary to bump up prices, charging the answer to save the planet crap is now expensive, which they have done for everyone else with everything, so there is no win , plus the road tax they will be loosing up needs to still be had as they won't give up that revune..so road tax will go up for us for the lose, no one wins regardless.
And as for the b*llshit of about great for the environment, and carbon footprint etc, these little cars are the best so for a classics simply because the have been built once and not been thrown away to be used for 30 odd years , surely that's the best for this throw away world we live in.
They are only thinking about sales and cash , our cash to make them richer, to many people happy to be sheep and be controlled.
It's all b*llshit, I'll stick with my old trusty roadster that have earned their place, requiring spanners every now and then against and electric car with no character, that as completely rapped the planet to be here far worse than ours will ever be or last ,and even then at the end of the short life ,they are not the best to die rotting into the planet .

I for one have no intention of going electric. F Pace, just out of warranty, range dropped to less than 100 mile's on a charge. Needs new batteries at over half the value of the car. Told the owner that cgargibgbefery night affects battery performance and life.

So here I am, 32 year old MX5, 25 year old motorbike and then our lasses Ecoboost Fiesta all petrol, all on E5.super.

As for diesel Gate no one as far as I know was miss sold one as these con merchant no win no fees would have you believe. I never asked about my Passat GT Estates emissions, all I was concrned about was the mpg and running costs.

Couple of years back in Scotland, Mr Money bags with his Tesla sat waiting for it to charge so he could complete his trip to Inverness. I'd driven 400 miles and still had a range if 300+ miles. Could have driven to Inverness and back on that.

All they are trying to do is curtail our use of the roads, force us onto crap public transport. Control us is their goal.Montor what we earn and spend by by implementing a cashless society.
