Rough running at high ish revs

Postby GreenMachine » Tue Oct 09, 2018 9:32 pm

Got a problem with Maggie the Mazda. Had the car a week and seemingly out of the blue she has started running rough at high ish revs.

When she’s cold it doesn’t seem so do it but when she’s warmed up and you want to give her a bit a few things happen.

Sometimes you get to third (or rather I’ve only noticed it in third and above) and you put your foot down you get to a touch over 3k rpm and she cuts out and sticks to 3k rpm until you come off the throttle and boot it again, at which point she revs normally.

However the most common thing she does is you get to 3.5-4K rpm in third (again only noticed in third and above, doesn’t seem to do it in first and second) and she starts lurching like your stamping on and off the pedal. Nothing I seem to do helps aside from change up and bring the revs down again but each time you get to that rev range your bouncing again.

I’ve changed the oil and filter, air filter, plugs, leads and the coils pack and it’s still doing it. I haven’t done a code read as I don’t have the led set up and I’m going to do a fuel filter but I’m a bit stumped as where to start.

If anyone has any pointers I would be very grateful.

You dont say which mark 5 you have.
But very much sounds like a blocked fuel filter.

It’s a 1999 mk2 1.8. Got a fuel filter on the way. Problems getting worse as this morning it cut power multiple times below 3k rpm. I’ll see how I get on with the fuel filter and check back in

Ok so new development I’d like your opinion on. When all these problems have occurred, and they have been getting worse, I was at between half and three quarter tank of fuel. It was very bad today and I had very little fuel, right down on the empty mark. I have just been and filled up to the brim and on the drive home the problem didn’t occur.

My theory is that the fuel tank vent has some issue and as the engine draws more fuel it is creating a vacuum in the tank and starving the engine, and it doesn’t happen from cold as the engine hasn’t drawn a vacuum in the tank.

Do you guys know of this happening before and do you know the location of the fuel tank vent for me to investigate.

Ok, so your first post states that you have only had the car for a week....you presumably don't know the history of the car.
How long has the car been unused.
How old is the fuel.
What has been put in the tank, possibly diesel?
Is there condensation in the tank or has it been topped with contaminated fuel.

I know it will cost, but i would drain off the old fuel, replace the filter and then give it an Italian tune up with fresh clean fuel.

Everything points to fuel filter or bad/contaminated fuel.

The cars only been on the road a week but I’ve owned it for 2 months while I fixed it up, when I bought it it had about half a tank which I used running the car once a week to keep everything moving. Last weekend I put 30 litres of fresh fuel in that I drained from my other car and it’s been since then that this problems occurred. It’s possible that the fuel from that car was contaminated or dodgy in some way. I’m doing the fuel filter tonight and il cut it open to see what’s going on inside it. This weekend I’ll get the fuel pump out the tank if I get time and check it just in case. It’s been a weird one that’s for sure. Drove fine this morning so we shall see how it goes.

I highly recommend not cutting the filter open bud...
