VLSD Diff Whine

Postby sylva » Tue Aug 13, 2019 6:56 pm

Hi guys,

I have a 92 Eunos with 97,000 miles on the clock. Over the years I have had the car there has been a slight wine at about 45mph that you can hear till about 50mph and then with all the other road noise dissapears, it can only be heard when you are presing on the accelerator if you lift off it is not there. It does this in 4th and 5th gears, maybe 3rd as well but too much other noise to hear. If the roof is down I barely hear it.

Do you think this is likely to be diif wear? It is the vlsd diff so my understanding is that it can't be rebuilt. Do I just ignore it until it becomes so loud I can't or should I get a second hand vlsd and put that in? If I go second hand is there any way I can tell if it is a good or a knackered diff before fitting?

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Many thanks, Duncan.

I am not at expert at all but it's my understanding that the whine would be audible all the time if it was about to fail.

The one on the FH12 I am driving whines more than the wife ever did and is pooped

Its being changed at the weekend.
1993 1.6 Eunos Roadster (gone)
1998 UK Mk 2 1.6 (gone)
2003 1.8 SVT Sport (Why did I sell it - cos the wife said so!!!!)
1991 1.6 Eunos Roadster with a bit of bling.

Life is a journey, best travelled topless in an MX5!!

You need to take in to account the age and wear..
It sounds like slight wear...try changing the oil first and see if it helps.
Personally if that does not cure it ..ride it until it fails.. sounds like you still have years left to be honest.
