Mk1 headlights

Postby John&Luke » Sat Jan 09, 2021 5:05 pm

Hi help please
Mk1 uk spec
Struggling with a problem on my rebuild. Background- As you may know complete strip down and rebuild so virtually every electrical connector has been unplugged and re plugged.

Problem-
With all lights off turn ignition switch to position 2 (run) and headlights raise!!! No lights they just come up on there own.

Turn ignition to off headlights go back down.

Have replaced relay, checked combination switch, check headlight retract switch. All seem ok

Headlight retract switch will raise and lower headlights when ignition is off but does not lower or raise when ignition is in run position.

I’m guessing the lift relay is getting a live feed from the ignition circuit some where but can’t figure where??

An thoughts please.

MM yes the dip dim module. I’ve tried unplug it and checking resistance seems ok. I’ve checked the relay and get th3 correct readings (according to my manual). If I remove the relay them the headlights DO NOT raise.

I’ve ruled out the light/indicator stalk as even with this removed it still happens. I’ve added gauges (all now disconnected) and upgraded to electric windows (switch now removed) next job tho disconnect the motors, its a trial by error approach.

I think it must be a rouge feed from the ignition circuit as this seems to be the trigger, ignition on = lights up. Ignition off = light down.

Any further advice welcome.

Update on headlight problem.

To recap, turn ignition to run, headlights raise and side light within headlights is on. Turn ignition to off headlights retract.

To chase the problem I have checked all the swiich gear and relays, all ok I believe. The problem seems to be that the headlight sidelight is getting a feed through the ignition circuit somehow. In turn the motor is getting a signal to raise.
Today I removed the whole dash again!!! In order to disconnect and reconnect everything one by one to see if I could isolate the feed.

No real joy, so started removing fuses from the interior fuse box one by one. Removing the top 2nd from left hand 10amp fuse seemed to do the trick. Car starts and light ps operate fine with this fuse removed. Unfortunately, my fuse box does not have a cover so I’m a little lost to what this fuse feeds???

In my manual I think it says Tail??? However tail lights and brake light work fine?

See pic’s on the fuse in question. WHAT IS THIS FUSE FOR PLEASE. It’s the one where my screwdriver is pointing?

The one with the fuse missing is the 10 amp METER fuse which is interior lights, you have something crossed inside or trapped.

MM thanks, interesting as I’ve had the doors open (obviously) whilst working on it. So interior light circuit would be hot. Will check further tomorrow.

Thank you :handgestures-thumbup:
