Markn wrote:Hi, we are based in Stockport and my son's 2001 MX5 (1.8) Mk2.5 is currently with the main dealer - they say we need a new immobiliser as it has a fault that cannot be cleared. It sounds very much like the problem outlined in this thread - the problem started with a flat battery and I tried jump starting the car with leads and then the immobiliser light came on. Any advice welcome. I don't expect to hear from Mazda until 03.01.14

Get it out of stockport mazda RRG quick before they slap a bill on you we rescued one a couple of years back for a owner from there that had a immobiliser fault in the end after a lot of work that they had left her in, not got a good word for stockport mazda with other dealings i have had with them myself and for other owners, the immbiliser you can do yourself after getting the right parts, which we can advise you on, in the mean time after we talked Barry through it all to do it him self he was kind enough to put this together for others to use
viewtopic.php?f=128&t=2938
These might be worth a read also from the one we rescued for Martin

Hi, I have read the posts that you kindly supplied. I also found this one http://www.auto-professionals.co.uk/sho ... 502&page=2 in which a Mazda tech says you can reprogram they key if you supply the serial number from the IMMO unit. I was wondering if (a) this will work (b) can you help inputting the serial number given it quite tricky and you are local? Failing that are we talking about buying secondhand ECU, immobiliser and new keys?!

Yeah but have you not got your roadster in a dealrship that are saying it will be a £2.500 repair, they should really be able to just fit the lucas box and reprogramme them all together? but they never seem to want to so it is far easier and cheaper to just fit a working s/hand system, which you can fit yourself also saving labour costs.

Hi,

I have spoken to Mazda and they are quoting £602 to replace the Immobiliser, and the crank angle sensor (ours is 'damaged') + £102 for diagnostics. These parts come with a 12 month guarantee - they say there might be an aftermarket Immobiliser for slightly less, one that would come with a 3 month guarantee. It isn't my decision tbh, it is my son's car and I think he's going to take his chances with the Main Dealer. Part of the Mazda quote involves re-programming the system - which looks a bit tricky. Obviously these prices are significantly more than buying secondhand parts, but at least the new immobiliser is a new genuine mazda part. I will let you know how we get on - I do have some reservations about RRG after readling your posts. Thank you for providing an alternative. The site is very useful. I will give you an update next week once the care is hopefully back on the road....

:text-offtopic: slightly.

Having read all the way through this thread the question I have is was it the jump start that caused it all and if so what is the best remedy for a stranded 5, is it push/ pull start, exchange the battery for a good one? What's best?

A correctly performed jump start should be no problem whatsoever. Same goes for a booster pack.

However, there are potential issues with both. Using the wrong booster (or one set incorrectly) can and does cause problems...I've heard of AA men slapping 24V across a car battery and popping things. Not following the correct procedure with jump leads can and does cause short circuits or reverse polarity - both of which cause at the very least some reversible damage (a blown fuse)...sometimes irreversible (some blown transistors in an ECU for example)

A tow or bump start will cause problems with an LSD. Even without one, the shock loading the 'wrong way' through the drivetrain causes a certain amount of wear and tear that is best avoided if possible.

The best and safest method is to connect a suitable good quality charger and come back later. However, we don't always have the time or facilities to do this when the moment arrives, so one of the other methods is fine if you take great care.

Agree
The biggest problem is no one knows how to do it correct, and it really is simple, never blow a car in 30 years, i'll do a how to on jump starting or useing a jumper pack on where to attach the leads, just as a foot note if there is of any need to tow a auto ,the back end MUST be off the ground and towed on it's front wheels.
You must also understand that a jump start or jumper pack start is NOT a "thats fixed and charged" forget it, most of the MK 2's will still be useing thier gel panasonic batteries which will need to be RE-CONDITIONED(small trickle charge) to bring them back to full health a jump and run will NOT do it, same with a wet cell ,it will need to be RE-CHARGED.
But if it as run flat even after everyday use then the battery and charging system will need to check over.

Same goes for TorSen LSD equipped cars

The alternative that AA/RAC often use is to lift the front but have the rear on dolly wheels. :handgestures-thumbup:

Hi, thanks for your input!

I've just put a new battery on and still the imobiliser light either doesn't come on at all or just sporadically flashes . Before if this happened I could just disconnect and reconnect batter with ignition on and it would start. But now nothing, just flashing light

It's wet through , it's been sat on my drive over Christmas. Moisture is high! I noticed the earth for imobiliser is chaired by several things included windshield wipers, when I put wipers on int it's like its on mid setting and I have to flick it back and forth to turn it off or int. I was gunna check earth. But it does need drying out for sure
