Cooling and Coolant Issues.
Cooling and Coolant Issues.
My car is a 1990 import.
When driving it normally it's fine, and doesn't overheat. However last summer when sitting in traffic it starts to overheat. Got to the point when I could hear it boiling once last year, I was on a busy road, and couldn't check under the bonnet though.
The few times I've used it over winter there have been no issues. But I never went far, and didn't stop for any length of time.
Drove it today from Winsford to Wigan and had to pull over in Wigan to check my iPad for directions. Only sat still for about 5 minutes and the needle had gone right up.
Is this likely to just be the fan not coming on, or is something else wrong?
Another thing is it seems to lose coolant, there's never coolant in the header tank or whatever it's called. Blink say it's fine but I'm not sure as every time I top it up, run it once there's no visible liquid.....
I'm not confident with anything more than an oil change to be honest. So unless there's something easy I can check myself, are there any garages you can recommend, that could sort this for me?
Thanks.

Re: Cooling and Coolant Issues.
Do you hear the fan come on when it gets warm?
If not - with a paperclip or bit of wire, connect the TFA and GND terminals in the diagnostic box with the ignition on. Does the fan come on now?
If not, the fan or its wiring is faulty. If so, either the fan relay or the thermoswitch is faulty.

If you can get to Wigan then Wayne is your man to see.
As said leave it ticking over & see if the fan comes on. If not test as described above.

Not sure. Will check when I've got the car. If Wayne, as mentioned above is in Wigan. Hopefully I can take the car straight from Autoline to him.

Re: Cooling and Coolant Issues.
Check that the cooling fan on the right as you look in the engine bay is kicking in, but it does sound like Lime scale build up in the rad, so the only option if it is, is swap it out for a new one.

Don't suppose you could have a look for me after I pick it up from Ste? I'd pay for your time obviously.

Re: Cooling and Coolant Issues.
Well this is a bit of a thread revival.
Since this thread it's had a new radiator fitted, one of Fast Fives. But when at standstill sitting in traffic etc, or on a hot day at lights too long the needle climbs. The fan never kicks in, I've not let the needle pass 3/4s as I don't want it to overheat. I stick the aircon on as this causes the other fan to go and seems to stop the problem. This is okay temporarily but obviously I want the issue sorting. Anything I should check first?

Re: Cooling and Coolant Issues.
I had what sound like the same symptoms for ages with my 1992 import - shortly after getting it I had various cooling problems that led to most hoses replaced, new rad and new water pump/thermostat - so after this I knew the cooling system itself was in pretty good shape, but nonetheless, the needle always climbed a bit (sometimes just slightly right of centre, sometimes almost halfway towards the "H", depending on weather) when stuck in traffic or at lights. Was like this for maybe two years, didn't seem to be doing any damage, and besides there was nothing I could do because none of the mechanics I took it to could figure out why it wasn't holding it's temperature better - and to be fair, the cause was hard to spot, because the fan did work, only it clearly wasn't working at full capacity... Recently it died completely, and since replacing it, the needle's never moved from it's usual position just left of centre. So after all the things I tried (and many posts on MX5OC etc!) it turned out to be just a weak fan.
Anyway, if yours isn't turning at all, there's no doubt that's where your problem lies! I'd say it's an easy fix too, compared to any problems with the actual coolant system.
