Recently I had to do quite a lot of work on my Mk1 due to the Cambelt Idler Pulley disintegrating. While I had all the bits off I needed to replace this pulley. I also renewed all three belts Cambelt tensioner and spring, a few rubber pipes and new set of spark plugs etc.
I also replaced the Crankshaft Seal, which I found to be the most difficult part of the whole job as it is nigh impossible, I suspect, to fit without a special tool whatever that is. After spoiling one seal trying to fit it with a hammer and block of wood I decided to design and produce a tool for the job.
The sketch below gives the dimensions. As I didn't have any aluminium of the sizes required to turn I used,............some pieces of OAK would you believe. Being wood is was easy to turn.
Note: the ends of piece A and piece B must be square and true to the diameter of the pieces so that they present the seal accurately up to the housing that the seal is going in to.
The second sketch shows how it is used, using the crankshaft bolt to wind the “tool” in with the seal on the end of the piece marked A. Note: Make sure that when replacing the seal that you clean any of the old seal off the inside bore of the housing that it is going into. Also smear the inside of the housing and, the outside diameter and bore of the seal with grease to help it to slide in smoothly.
