opening the boot without the lock barrel
Hi guys I've been redirected here by someone on the piston heads forum. I'm hoping you can help as I'm kinda screwed at the moment. Earlier I shut the keys in the boot of my mark 1 mx5 luckily the roadside recovery bloke helped me get the keys out. Unfortunately we only manage to get them out by inflating pads under the edge of the boot and fishing them out with some wire. Before we managed this however he had tried to fish the cable that joins the latch to the lock barrel. I won't put up the details as to how we done this but it resulted in unclipped it from the latch. So I now have my keys but no way of opening my boot can anyone please help.
I understand this is a bit of a dodgy question and unfortunately I can only hope you will believe me when I say this information is purely for use on my own car.
Failing this im going to have to take a cutting disc to my car which I would prefer to avoid.
Cheers

Re: opening the boot without the lock barrel
Fantastic help Wayne all done. There was a slightly perverse pleasure in ripping out the cluster.
For anybody else that is stuck in the same position here is a quick write up of wow to go through the light cluster to open the boot.
You will need hammers chisels and a 10 mm deep reach socket.
In all honesty the big hammer and crowbar will be sufficient but very clumsy. I would advise using a small chisel to remove the lense as there is less risk of slipping and putting a beautiful scratch along you car. You will also need a replacement light cluster. Or in my case a friend who has there's tucked in the garage and is willing to let you take the cluster from them. (Note these friends are worth keeping).
PLEASE READ THIS PART CAREFULLY AND CHECK THE NOTES.
now for the fun part.
Break the lense from the light cluster on the drivers side. work from the edges as there are still perfectly fine bulbs that you may wish to keep. Once the lense is of pull out the bulbs and using a bit of brute force and tact break the main body of the cluster.
NOTE!!!!!!!!
when leavering the cluster try to always leaver against the cluster itself or up against the boot or rear quarter using a cloth or old patch of leather to prevent damage to the paintwork. DO NOT leave down or left as the surrounding panel is plastic and is liable to break.
There is a battery very close to the light cluster DO NOT just smash straight through as you may rupture the battery then you will be in a world of trouble. I worked from the left hand side of the cluster to avoid the battery.
it is also important to remember the opening is not huge and that if you hammer a chisel through too hard in the wrong place you are going to punch whole through the body of the car. As I found out the hard way. If this does happen don't panic you can always just plug some silicone into the hole although the rubber seal for the light should cover them. The main point is to coat the bare metal to prevent rust.
Once you have got enough space to reach in you will need to trace the top edge of the carpet in the boot and pull out the Christmas tree clips to gain access to the latch. As you can see from the following picture the linkage had been disconnected making it necessary to go to these lengths.
Run your finger from left to right along the bottom of the latch mechanism and you will undo the latch linkage and hey presto you have access to your boot. I'm afraid I couldn't get a decent picture of where the linkage to undo the mechanism is. But it is very easy to catch if you run your finger along the bottom edge.
Now all you need is to fix the problem which meant you needed this information and to remove the remains of the rear light by undoing the 5 retaining nuts.
NOTE before fitting the new light cluster check that the boot is now working on the key otherwise you will have to break the whole thing apart again.
After fitting the new cluster grab a friend and run through a lights check to make sure it all works.
Last but not least fix some form of secondary release mechanism to avoid future problems.

Go for it i get a smaller flush fitting button from maplins to put into the arm rest compartment better well made switch and looks better, on Daryls project Roadster we put a Mk 2 interior in and used a spare dash switch hole with a OE press release switch, so you can use the key, cable or electric popper
Note for above how to..... the OE cable to release the boot latch/lock was also unattached and the AA chap who knocked the barrel bar to the latch off, never re connected it, so this was the only way in, in this case with the least amount of damage, just a replacment light unit,, there are other ways in depending on the situation, which we cannot post on here if the keys have been locked in the boot or you are locked out off your roadster, we will help with this info if an owner is stuck by a phone call only,Contact us by e-mail or the PM system, but we will neeed proof that you own the roadster in question before we can help and share the advice.
