hi, i would say if the rust has holed and gone into the sill behind then it will fail, but if its only the fender should be ok, i had a hole in my rear wing where the battery sits,
i have welded it now, but initially trying to get the car on the road, the mot man said as long as its covered up it would be ok. so i put some gaffer tape on it for the test.
but where yours is it might be deemed as structural if its gone through to the sill.

Bang a pic up, the skuttle drains off behind the wing and is a mud trap, common thing, take the arch linner off and give it a good blast between them and watch that crap come out, fire both ways from the door side to the wheel arch, and from the wheel arch towards the door, get it dry and have a good look in there.

Hi, I got the two bolts undone at the bottom of my front wings, and then pulled it back a little. The bolts were rusty and may not have been undone since 1990 so I spent much effort making sure I didn't snap them off. That gave me good access. I got enough dirt out to fill a small flower-pot each side. Then good scrub, dry, and Dinatrol. I saw a forum thread that suggested a couple of washers put between the wing and the sill when putting the two bolts back, to allow drainage. So I did that as well. Time will tell...

The washer crap will not make a difference,Wheres that come from? as it will still get blocked up with leaves regardless, that just live there and decay/breakdown which turns into fine silt, then stays wet for longer and eats the metal, the same as it would without the washers.

Every couple of months once you have protected it all ,just blast it all out with a pressure washer or hose pipe.

In my case, now that the two bolts are free and lubed, I intend to open and clean that area on a yearly basis anyway so washers don't really matter one way or the other.

For the curious, here is the reference to washers. It's on the mx5nutz forum. BTW, am I allowed to quote from other forums? If not then I will stop.

Not a problem with links from other sites buddy, and that is some great pics of just how bad the build up of old leaves etc get wedged and just rot down to soil again,,,,,but the washer thing ... :laughing-rolling:
Clean the area, proof it, and then just stay on top of it, washers will not make any difference what so ever.

She sailed through with no advisories ! But wing has totally rotted on drivers side just the bolts are intact ! Need a wing as soon as ! Preferably silver unless a piece can be welded on , but I think metal too thin that's why easier to replace it?
