Mk1 Turns Over, Wont Start

Postby lilwashu » Sat Oct 07, 2017 9:13 am

I have recently acquired a 1990 Mk1 which up to yesterday has been fine. I went to start it and it just turns over but never catches. Tried with a booster pack and no difference so I don't think it's the battery.

It has had an immobiliser fitted sometime in the past, which has been removed - a mass of wires remains which I did try to cable tie out of the way last week (didn't test starting immediately after - oops). The yellow plug that should be in the fuel pump relay is missing and the wires are connected directly to the pins (they seem secure).

I couldn't smell any fuel during my extended starting attempts, so I jumpered FP and GND on the diagnostics block expecting to hear some noise from the fuel pump - couldn't hear anything with ignition on or off. It was my understanding that this bypasses the fuel pump relay, but some more googling suggests that it doesn't on an early Mk1.

Should jumpering FP and GND make some noise on an early Mk1 regardless of the state of the fuel pump relay?

It is a by pass for even the early MK1's....
Have you run a flash code test?

I don't know much about electrics (in fact nothing) but having read your post I would say your issue lies with the removal of the alarm/immobiliser.
You say you moved the wires to cable tie them out of the way, try the wiring there to see if you have dislodged something.
If the engine is turning over then it won't be a battery fault.
Failing that I would suggest you get an auto electrician to look at properly removing the alarm/immobiliser to negate any possibility of the car catching fire.
Loose wiring is never going to be 100% safe.

Did she run before you removed the units?

Thanks for the replies - it's not here at the moment but will give the LED a go.

The immobiliser was already gone when I bought it, it's been fine for the last month or so.

It turns out this was down to a broken wire under the driver's carpet which carries 12V to the fuel pump, so no idea how that happened. Now all back up and running!
