Mk1 - How Long To Warm Up?

Postby Mr Bridger » Sat Mar 17, 2018 7:39 pm

Hi, I've just bought a MK1 1.8 MX5 and it seems to be taking a long time for the engine coolant to get up to temperature. It's not the warmest day today(!) but I drove it about 8 miles and the needle on the temperature gauge was still only at a quarter. Is that normal?

I've only really done one other trip in the car and that was about 160 miles back from where I bought it, so I do know that it does get up to temperature eventually and does not overheat.

Thanks

With the recent cold spell it will certainly take longer to reach optimum temperature as the air coming in is cooling the radiator more. Wait and see what it's like in a couple of weeks or so.

sounds like a long time to me! However, was it a freezing cold day and did you have the heater cranked to full?

Mine usually takes about 5 mins no matter the weather. Give it a flush and see what happens. :confusion-confused:
