Have i missed something ?

Postby wazza99 » Sat May 19, 2018 6:46 pm

Ive just changed the rear struts on my mx5 mk1 (well few weeks back) at the same time i changed the bump stops and gaiters for used mk2 ones. All seemed straight forward, i just took off the old one piece ones, dropped on the rubber bump stop, thin side down and put the gaiter on top, then put the strut back in the car, i didnt remove the top mounts from the car, just used the lower suspension arm to compress the spring, all seemed well and indeed it is on the drivers side. Passenger side had a knocking, turned out id not torqued top strut nut fully :-)....anyway roll on 300-400 miles knockings back, checked top nut, still at toque (46NM), checked all other torques, under load, so have i done something stupid ? it definitely sounds like the top strut again, but unlike 1st time, when i bounce the car it doesn't knock, but over rough roads it does. I just can't see any logic.

This is how i put them on, sorry i cant seem to post pics directly.

Thanks, re-torqued all nuts nothing loose. Top nut 46nm ? top mounts i never touched. Im sure its the top nut knocking....ive ordered a new one and washer just to rule out the nyloc one, but tbh it is at torque.

For the basics though have i put these on right ?

Re: Have i missed something ? (knocking rear shock)

Well, after an aborted day out yesterday due to the knocking......i believe i've solved the issue.

Seems the strut top nuts need a washer, without it they torque up but not flush, hence leaving play, just a few mm but enough to knock.

I assumed i'd fitted both sides the same but again seems forgetfully but helpfully i had put the old split washer on the none knocking side, hence no knock !

Now before you all think im stupid :-), the originals did have a plain nut and split washer, but the replacements had a new nyloc nut only, i assumed the latter replaced the 1st but seems not, the nyloc bottoms out on the threads hence torquing up. Seems a washer of a few mm is needed regardless.

Anyway hope it helps someone.

Benefit of being 50......old n stupid sometimes but always resourceful :-)
