Time to scrap ??!!

Postby appletree » Thu Jul 05, 2018 3:03 pm

I have a MkII automatic which has been off the road for some months. It developed starting problems, eventually diagnosed as, probably, related to the immobiliser. The independent garage I use, and others I have tried, wouldn't tackle it, and I have searched for a specialist: I thought I had found one reasonably close to me ( I'm in the Bristol area ), but never got a response to calls and emails.

I have seen the possible fix online, involving a replacement immobiliser and ECU, but after months off the road there will be more work needed. Basically, I don't know whether it's worth pursuing further, given the potential cost, uncertainty and difficulty - including having to have it transported to the repairer. However, it is ( was ! ) a great car, registered in 2001 but with fewer than 35,000 miles on the clock. It would be a real shame to scrap it, so I'd really appreciate any advice and any information on a specialst who might be willing to do the work. Thank you !

2001 with less than 35k on the clock!

If the body work is sound then it has to be worth the effort to sort out a fix.

Well IMHO it is

Sorting the Immobiliser is not that difficult and can be done in a up and running in 30 minutes which you can do yourself, there is a guide in here in the subject which i personally talked Barry through over a phone and he did not spanner, and put together a guide for others to use and follow..

We can talk you through it buddy before you get a stupid cost from else where to do it for you.

Thanks - I appreciate that advice and have reviewed the guide you mention; having read it carefully twice, it is, as you suggest, not as daunting as I first thought.

First thing I have to do, though, is move the car, which is parked on street against a wall, so I can access the passenger door sill. It's an automatic, so I believe this is not as simple as putting it in neutral and pushing !

as the man says, into neutral handbrake off and push it.

Its only an issue with an auto box if you intend tow an auto any great distance.

lets have her fixed while the sun is still shinning

Thanks for clarifying that. I had been slightly dubious at what I'd been told, but did not want to create any more issues by doing the wrong thing !

As you say, now's the time to get her up and running !
