clunking from back of gearbox area

Postby oldbargee » Wed Jan 09, 2019 12:29 pm

Hi Guys,
I have been chasing a clunk for ages with no joy and it's driving me mad. The car is a 1.8 Mk2.5 sport 2002. 45,000 miles The sound seems to be coming from beneath just in front of the passenger seat though it could be transmitted noise. It's worst at fairly low speeds on uneven roads and particularly bad reversing up an incline. As far as I can I have checked wishbone bushes top and bottom, the sway bar drop links have been replaced. The exhaust feels secure and I cannot create a clunk by shoving it. Similarly I can't re create it by jumping up on down on the sill inside passenger door or by pushing the car down at that corner. Before I try to remove the large metal plate that covers the centre of the exhaust I was wondering if there were any other exhaust support bushes beneath there that could be at fault? I don't think it's the propshaft as engaging gear doesn't create the noise either. If anyone could give me a starter on this it would be a great start to 2019!!

I seem to recall once reading about a clutch fault that caused a judder at slow speeds and in particular reverse.

It was said to be a problem on the 2.5s and I believe there was an updated clutch solution.

That said I am not a super dooper master Mazda mender, he will be along later one way or another.

definitely more of a clunk than a rattle. It does have a bit of a clutch problem leading to a juddering start when cold. Could a lump of clutch be bouncing around ? Bizarre thought but having exhausted the other possibilities........... Guess I'll just have to get the large steel plate off and hope something turns up.

Are you sure it is not the diff?
Cluch judder is a common issue on the 2/2.5's straight from the dealership.

definitely coming from in front of seating, will get wriggling under and take out the underfloor panels and see if anything reveals itself.

I feel a right t*t reporting this but I just had an MOT done. Once the car was on the ramps with the front end lifted up, we spotted that a locknut on the front right antiroll bar drop link had come loose allowing movement. Absolutely amazing to me how transmitted sound fooled me. Anyway, the kind tester grabbed a couple of spanners and tightened it up. Job done and my love for this little 16 year old car is back. Not one thing to do for the MOT. Boy, these wee beasts are tough. Thanks anyway for the ideas, hopefully my experience might help someone else.
