ABS Light does not come on

Postby Adamvass » Thu May 23, 2019 10:02 am

Help!

My 5 failed it's MOT yesterday, the ABS light does not come on when you first turn the ignition on.

I have spend a few hours testing things but my multimeter has broken. I will pick up a new one and test more tonight.

I have tested so far:
1. Bulb works - I have tried 3 or 4 working bulbs and holders to confirm
2. Power to one side of the bulb from the 'ign' side of instrument cluster
3. When using a test lamp between the 'ign' (blk/yel) wire which is powered with ignition on and the 'ABS' (blu/yel) wire, the test lamp does not illuminate.

My two current guesses are:
1. Faulty ECU that does not send the signal to the instrument cluster
2. Faulty wire (blu/yel) from ECU to instrument cluster.

Can anyone shed some light on this or at least advise what I can test to narrow this down some more?

Thanks,
Adam

Have you tried another earth to that bulb connection on the cluster.

I set out to the garage armed with a functioning multimeter last night. Tested to make sure I had power to and from the ABS control unit and checked the ABS wire to the instrument cluster (blu/yel) was switching the earth as it should - no issues found.

Next removed the instrument cluster and put a test lamp across the ABS bulb circuit - we have light - a fault in the printed circuit board is the culpret. I jumped on to instagram and found someone 14 miles away with a spare instrument cluster and now all my troubles have gone away :-D

Thank you for your comments, let's hope its still working at the re-test next week

Adam
