Eunos Roadster - undertray and cabin heat

Postby EunosPilot » Sun Jul 28, 2019 3:22 pm

So, the weekend before last I did a lot of "under the car stuff" - oil changes, fuel filter etc . After that was done, I reinstalled installed the undertray which I have been running without for about a year or more. Since I have reinstalled it, I have noticed an increase in the cabin heat - footwells and gearbox tunnel. Now I know its been hot in the UK recently, however I wondered if there was any opinion on the undertray - some say it reduces engine heat other not. Over the last year I have not noticed any overheating symptoms with the engine, and if it is adding to cabin heat, I should probably remove it again ( until the weather breaks anyways ) .

So what is your experiences , If any ?

Thanks !

As far as I am aware all of my limited number of mx5s have all had the full undertrays fitted.

I can't say I have ever noticed the heat build up apart from our first Eunos when the gear shift boot was completely split.

Be interested to know the thoughts of those more knowledgeable

:auto-layrubber:
1993 1.6 Eunos Roadster (gone)
1998 UK Mk 2 1.6 (gone)
2003 1.8 SVT Sport (shouldnt have sold it)
1991 1.6 Eunos Roadster with a bit of bling.

Life is a journey, best travelled topless in an MX5!!

The under tray will not be giving you the heat you mentioned...the tray is an essential item to be fitted for a number of reasons....
1).....It stops all kinds of rubbish coming into the engine bay, in some cases hitting your aux belts etc when not needed and snap....wait for road side assistance.
2).... aerodynamics.....without it you will get front lift as the air circulates itself under your bonnet than directed off and under.

It is simply because it as been hot..i would also check your upper and lower gear shaft seals.

Thanks for the responses - mines the Auto so no shift boot . Not sure if there is an auto shifter seal that needs attention.

Most the heat seems to be coming from the gearbox tunnel, the bulkhead and the vents - I adjusted the cable to close the blend door fully which helps a little , though I suspect that is not sealing fully and the heater matrix air is leaking out. Was thinking of bypassing the matrix altogether with a loop back, it might help.

So is the heat inside or outside?

Both  - though your right, started this discussion about undertray and now talking about the heater

The gearbox tunnel seems the biggest source of discomfort - it seemed less hot with the undertray off however , as you say , the protection from road debris is important. Not sure what temps the exhaust gets too , but the clearance between it and tunnel / gearbox is small so there must be some build up / radiant heat transfer.

After reading some posts on Miata.net, I have ordered an exhaust heat shield from Agrismach . Will report back if there any significant improvement .

The shifter boot should still be fine, they seem to last for ever on the Autos.
