After Market Wing Mirrors help

Postby Blam09 » Wed May 24, 2023 2:33 pm

Hello all you menders.
Just bought some JDM mirrors of an Eunos look like the M2 mirrors, I know they aren't but they are nice. Need to get them apart and can not find anyway into them. there are no screws on the outer ring I have tried an oil filter strap and it wont turn. It will lift about 1mm but that is it. Has anyone managed to get these type of mirror apart?

Found out it was just silicone. Soak in Carb cleaner dissolves it.

Plan on cleaning them up and get them coated black (Xylan) the bases were the main reason for buying them, chrome came up reply good but can't make my mind up all black or black base and chrome bodies. Going on a BRG V spec.

I think i would stick with the chrome/silver to stay with that retro look they give.

The chrome bodies look great polished up and sat against the car and I must admit i think it looks very retro against the BRG especially as the chrome is not smooth it has a weathered aged finish. Then I remembered the Xylan finish I had done on some of my bike parts, its almost a satin translucent black, I thought it would tie in with the black door trim better than the chrome, and as its a coating i thought if its applied over the chrome should look good whilst looking old, still undecided.
The bases are solid cast aluminium. I have managed to polish up one of them and removed what was left of the chrome. I will have these coated. They will be a pain to stop corrosion otherwise. The bases were the only reason I bought the mirrors they look like they came with the car rather than after market. Have also replaced the mirrors with convex lenses which should accommodate the smaller viewing area and made up some epdm base gaskets to protect the door. Will post up pics when complete.
The inspiration began with this next stop some steelies (if I can find some that aren't as heavier than the car itself);

After market like the ones in the picture above. Only thing is they all seem to be 15x6/7 wide, most are Mini wheels or VW and then you have the offset issue you can get close but not exactly. I did find a company in the states that makes an alloy wheel that looks just like the wheels in the picture but they were very expensive.

If anyone is interested I found out the mirrors are Autoblaze Mirrors.
They appear in Japanese catalogues, not sure how old they are. I thought they would be simple pressed steel chrome plated, but they are made from brass including the mirror retaining ring all the washers are copper chrome plated.
Decided to colour match the bodies to the car BRG and have rubbed off the chrome on the glass retainers going to clear coat over the brushed brass. Should look vintage with black bases...

Sorry about pictures, still waiting for bases back from coatings.
Bodies prepped ready for acrylic primer roughed the chrome up with 80/100 grit. As you can see one of the bodies where it sat on the base was damaged I have managed to braze a crack in the body (HTS 2000), and beat out some of the dent, I'm sure any imperfections can be sorted after priming, not that you would see it on the car..
Mirror bezels all set for clear coat, removed chrome with 320 and finished with 600 to key the clear.
Waiting for a bit of heat before I get painting, what happened to summer....

Finally got them painted, two coats epoxy and four coats cellulose BRG. Just waiting on the bases back from the coatings guy. I have tried to make them look aged like the car (33 years old) which is why I did not go OTT on polishing all the pitting out of the brass bezel before I clear coated it and I think 2K would have made the bodies look too shiny and cheap. .

Original bezels were siliconed in place this isn't ideal and before fitting I did try it off the car. In the sun the air inside the mirror pressurised the mirror as it expanded and pushed the bezel off the body. I ended up drilling and tapping an M3 hole and fitting one bolt on the underside you can hardly see it but it is enough to stop the bezel coming off should the silicon fail.
I noticed my doors had three holes for the mirrors to mount on, two for the screws and one large hole in between. I thought this was only on later cars, mine is on a 1990 plate and the VIN matches for that year along with other details like the seat belt label. Only mentioning as a lot of after market mirrors like the Jass Type stipulate you have to drill the doors to accommodate the swivel mechanism, so maybe the early ones had the larger hole between the mounts and the later cars not? The OEM mirrors that I took off did not use the large hole and are flush bottomed.

Sounds like they my have been swapped at some point along the way.
