1.8 Mk2 Jap RS in need of an engine

Postby andymaxwell » Sun Aug 16, 2015 2:07 pm

Hi All,

If you have an engine going would you please let me know? My car has suffered a HG failure and as there may be some history of overheating I am giving serious thought to swapping out the engine.

If you would be able to supply a price + delivery and let me know how many miles the engine has on it that would be great .
And if you know any of the car's history that would be great also. :text-thankyouyellow:

the guys here will recommend Autolink I can also suggest a guy in Ireland (Robert Maguire) who can ship it for you and from what I remember he had a low mileage mk2 in for breaking recently. I can pm the number if you want to try him but autolink might be handier. :handgestures-thumbup:

Hi Yolo, that number will come in handy, thank you, please pm me. Autolink seem good but the engine they have on their site at the time of writing seems a little pricey. :obscene-drinkingcheers:

Hi MM, sorry for not replying earlier. I think I know where you mean (JYD?)and I've had a chat to the guy, it sounds a very good engine and he sounds very trustworthy. But my mechanic was adamant that we should open 'er up and see what she looked like before going down the new engine route "better the devil you know" kind've thing. And although I wasn't convinced I didn't want an argument.

All sorts of hoses were old and need replacing and he pointed out the areas on the pistons where water had entered the cylinders, cutting through the carbon deposits.

Cilck pictures for an exploded view.

The head is off at the engineers now being scrutinised and I should know the results today or tomorrow.

Mmm. No results yet I'm afraid. They'll clean the head up apparently, maybe that will make it better?! *hopes*

Results are in. Engineers report states no cracks in head but a slight warp necessitates a skim. Interestingly though it looks like it has been done before. Hmm.
The mechanic is happy the block is ok btw and will fit a slightly thicker head gasket to compensate and i think i heard him talk about recessing the valves a little more to cope with the second skim.

So, get the work done and sell her on i think. Unless there isn,t really problem with running an engine where the head has been skimmed twice.
What do you guys think?

Saw the engine block today (the head is still with the engineers) and they have cleaned it up superbly - it now looks like new (photos to follow)
Just awaiting the head and a secondhand thermostat housing (from where I don't know yet), they'll put it all back together, cleanup the engine exterior and test.

Oh and they found the radiator was blocked around the bottom hose so that may be the reason why the hg went for the second time. They'll fitting a new one and away we go :)
I'm tired of thinking and worrying about it now - have to trust the mechanic, just want it back and running again :auto-layrubber:

Still no results. Well I say that...the head is back from the engineers and on the block. Just the rest of the connections to go.
Updates to follow :)

It all seems like an expensive waste of time and effort to me. MX5 engines are cheap and plentiful...

It is going to cost daft money and she will never run right, but to be honest am not happy that you will pass the problem onto a new owner into the scene.
