Spitting Copperslip

Postby drumtochty » Mon Feb 06, 2017 8:26 pm

Friend turned up with his very neat 1997 Jaguar X300 V8 and I could smell the brakes.

Put it on the lift and took of the front nearside wheel.

The wheel did not want to come off, therefore when we got the wheel off, I cleaned the mating surface of the wheel and wire brushed the ring on the hub that the wheel locates on.

I then painted on Copperslip to the locating ring which was so hot the copperslip melted and started spitting back.

First time that has happened to me!

Had an 09 plate beetle in today, owner said brakes were getting hot. No wonder, calipers were fine but pads siezed solid in the hangers.

By the signs of the heat being generated, maybe explains the total absence of any copper grease as would normally be expected.

Some people dont deserve a car!!

Funnily enough I have been recommissioning my daughters 03 beetle, before she went off backpacking she had complained that the the fuel consumption had gone up. Both rear brakes were as you described. I think heavy corrosion on the hangers was the cause of the pads jamming.

We get people in complaining of fuel consumption going down. Usual cause is a lack of general servicing, the amount of cars with sticking brakes we see is ridiculous.

Had a Peugeot in this week, major MOT failure - owner says, it sailed through its last two tests, question asked was when was it last serviced - reply "about two years ago when it failed its mot"

Nowt else to say really :confusion-confused:
