Pete's latest idea is to fit a MK2/Mk2.5 6 Speed Gearbox in his MK1 race car.
Will it fit?
What you put in, you'll get back ten fold

Re: Petes MK1 Race Car - Can he fit a 6 speed Mk2 Gearbox?
Yes, it will fit.
However to carry out a complete conversion he will need the plate between the engine & box from the 6-speed as there is a slight difference to one of the bolt holes for the starter.
Also ideally he'd use the MK2 starter as the MKI starter will only mount using 2 of the 3 bolts. The MK2 starter is lighter than the MK1 version which is useful in a race car.
The mechanical speedo drive needs to be moved from his old gearbox as the 6-speed has an electronic drive (easy job - 1 x bolt).
The connectors to one of the switches (neutral or reverse, I can't remember off hand) need to be changed to a different type, again an easy job.

And before he does anything he needs to check the race series regs to make sure a 6 speed box is allowed.
