Pete as a engine problem with his Mk1 with oil

Postby Mazda Mender » Wed Oct 29, 2014 9:29 pm

He is back.....I have had a e-mail from the unluckiest owner on the planet......
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A couple of weeks ago the engine got removed so the engine bay could be deep cleaned and re painted While the car was in the body shop the engine had a full service....Cambelt,Waterpump,Drive belts,Oil and filter,Spark plugs,Clutch slave cylinder,Clutch and flywheel,Rocker cover and gasket,Inlet mani and gasket,Exh mani and gasket,Engine went back in at the end of last week and the last job was to bleed the clutch.

Clutch was bled today and the car smoked heavily? and the oil pressure gauge was reading incorrectly, which was Diagnosed as a faulty oil pressure sender unit but Two of the bores are also wet with oil to? The front crank seal is leaking now also?

Got a new sender unit coming in the morning and will try some new oil along with a treatment, If that cures it,would it be valve stem seals or piston rings....
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well can you work out whats wrong and how to help him sort this problem out? :confusion-confused: he needs your help fast......

This has got to be a breathing pressure problem, with the smoke, oil is getting past the rings or is coming down the valves. The fluctuating oil pressure would also suggest that. Are the breather valves okay?

He says thanks for your reply, but he is at at loss and does not know where or how to check, what does he need to do? where does he need to look and at what.

As a matter of elimination and it won't take long take the plugs out and give it a compression test. At the same time have a look at the plugs to see if all 4 cylinders are burning cleanly. Also as above make sure the engine is breathing properly from it's breather pipes. If it's not it could build up crank case compression inside the engine forcing oil out from oil seals all over.

These are the Breather pipes from the Rocker cover.
The one on the right you should be able to suck and blow down.
The one one the left has a one way valve that can stick. If you take it out and wipe it clean you can blow through the valve and down the pipe, but not down the pipe and through the vale which would be back into the engine.

If you can't blow either way then get a new one.

If the engine was out it wasn't laid on its side or been plugged up with anything ?

It as not been on it's side and there is nothing plugged into any pipes.

nedski wrote:Might be daft but is the oil level correct ?

Oil level was fine and was fresh oil and filter( see above)

Taken the PSV vavle out and cleaned it, all now working fine but still the same problem and now sound rotten  .

Has it developed hydraulic lifter rattle. Has it actually got low oil pressure ?
Oil pressure should not affect it smoking as oil pressure is enclosed in it's own system. Low or high oil pressure should not make it smoke or oil the bores, as the oil should not enter the combustion chamber .
I would think oil pressure and burning oil are two different problems. :confusion-confused:

It's like a school exam lol but more interesting.

game over. engine full of sand or glass beads. New engine needed. and tell Pete not to put the shiny cam cover on the new engine without first removing all the baffle plates and cleaning out the sand/glass. Believe it or not, I know someone who ruined 2 engines by swapping the culprit cam cover onto the next new engine...

:bow-yellow:

I have hit this twice also ,one had been blasted and painted and the other blasted and polished, both with the same out come......New engine.

And don't even think about just putting a new head on it or running a engine flush, you will be wasting your time. :naughty:

So if any one is having a rocker cover blasted, remove the baffles first and refit after blasting and painting, I personally recommend removing them even for just painting, because once that crud is in there and on the engine , you are not getting it back out.

So new engine for good old Pete
