Poor Pete's Mk1 flat battery in the morning
Pete is occasionally getting in his mk1 1.6 Eunos in the mornings to find the battery has gone flat. He charges it up on his trusty trickle charger for a day and it seems fine. He's checked that nothing is left switched on. Sometimes he can leave the car for a week without the battery going flat, other times he parks the car at midnight, but when he comes out at 6am, the battery is totally dead. What should he try next to find the cause?
Re: Poor Pete's Mk1 flat battery in the morning
I`d start by getting the alternator & battery checked out! Odd that it can survive a week when not in use though so i`d suspect a duff alternator.

battery is ok, it often holds a charge for a week. When the car is running Pete checks across the battery terminals with his voltmeter, it shows 14.5 volts, so the alternator should be good.

battery connection is good, he's also checked where the battery earth bolts to the body, and the earth strap at the rear of the engine behind the exhaust manifold, and even the one to the rear of the powerplant frame, all are good connections.

nice try, but no, car is a manual. Also in the auto with the solenoid problem, the battery would last for a day at least without going flat.

Re: Poor Pete's Mk1 flat battery in the morning
Headlamps are both bright and connectors are not melted, but Pete was thinking of doing the 'flash to pass' headlamp mod so the lights pop up when he flashes them. He's doing that this afternoon I think.
Re: Poor Pete's Mk1 flat battery in the morning
Does he have a dodgy headlight stalk meaning his headlights come on without popping the headlights sometimes?

Re: Poor Pete's Mk1 flat battery in the morning
Lazzer has it right. After Pete fitted the flash to pass diode, the mod worked ok, but yesterday morning the battery was completely dead and the lights were stuck in the up position.
The combination lights/wipers stalk had gone wrong, causing main beam to come on occasionally. He hadn't noticed when the lights didn't pop up as they just lit up the ground under the car.
We suggested he leave the light stalk pushed away from him when the car is parked, that way the flash won't be triggered.
This seems to be a problem that only affects cars with the early straight lights/wiper stalks from 1989 to early 1995.
