This is the section to see what is hidding behind those panels, and how to get rid of the tin worm, cutting out and welding in fresh metal, protection and paint.

More chassis rails rotting - mk2

Postby Philash » Wed May 15, 2013 9:23 pm

Hi everyone,

The bad news : I discovered today that my drivers side chassis rail is rotting through. The passenger side looks very solid.
Between this and the early rot on the sills, June is going to be a costly month.

The good news : Julian - DoctorMX5 is on the case. I am sure she will be fit as a fiddle in no time. :-)

Phil.

Don't forget to check chassis rails on mk2's as well as the sills. They are made from brown cheese !!

Thanks for the offer mate much appreciated, but the jobs done. It's not a perfect pretty restoration job, but it's good and strong for an MOT and the customer gets what they pay for in this case.
I think for a really proper job they must need nearly a full chassis leg though.

Thanks to junk yard dog,
I used the rail repair sections and am now a happier 5'er.
Dont despair, if you love your moter !
Cost me around ÂŁ150 to fix, - cut and remove all rust traces, welded, painted, and waxoyl'd (internally).

Finished prior to top coat and under seal.

(sorry, upside down)
Tape over these holes to prevent water flowing into rails.
I used duct tape then painted original colour.
