Autotek paint (their alloy wheel paint)

This is the section to see what is hidding behind those panels, and how to get rid of the tin worm, cutting out and welding in fresh metal, protection and paint.

Autotek paint (their alloy wheel paint)

Postby JakeD » Sun Jan 04, 2015 9:49 pm

Bought some Autotek alloy wheel paint (branded specifically for alloys) from motor spares place just around the corner from me, along with some lacquer. Got home, read the can......and the alloy wheel paint says lacquer top coat CAN NOT be applied afterwards.

It's a semi gloss finish, so I guess its specifically tough / durable enough (according to them) not to need lacquer.

A bit dubious myself, anyone else have any experience? Or thoughts?

Makes sense to me. Its the hot/corrosive brake dust that dies most of the damage so an alloy wheel paint that needs a lacquer would be pointless as its the top layer that needs to be able to cope. An alternative would be a standard paint and a specific alloy wheel lacquer if there is such a thing.

Yeah its that stuff.

But I've stripped them right back to bare metal, used metal filler, sanded, done sone more filling, more sanding.....even more sanding, then used an acid etch primer. Every guide I've read suggests colour paint and lacquer.

I want to do a decent job, but they're not show standard wheels or anything, just thought I'd give it a go over xmas break.

The ones I've bought are polished finish like thesehttp://www.mx5-mazda.co.uk/se1.htm, so gonna get them professionally done

I am not saying abandon the project, far from it, just use the right gear, i'll tell you what to use, you should of asked me before getting it, those one hit cans are flash over cans, you do not want to waste your time sorting this and lasting a couple of months, but you do not want to spend daft money on taking them somewhere to be done, but you want them to look right and last. i'll tell you . :handgestures-thumbup:

Found some old photo's. home painting wheels.
Image

Ground out the worst with a soft pad on a grinder.
Image

Sand them down with production paper then wet and dry.
Image

You must etch prime to key the metal.
Image

Then normal primer
Image

I then used a cellulose base coat black aerosol. followed by 2k top coat lacquer aerosol. I must admit 2k aerosol lacquer is good but not as good as from a spray gun.
Image

And another set I painted.

Prepping is the key, this is where all your time should be taken up, i am sure Neil will agree, I have a set ready for refurb which are also multi stud, that i will be making just 4 stud at the same time, one has some kerbing but the others are ok and just want keying and flating, i will do a how to, but they are some time off yet at this time of year, Jake is also going to bang a how to together now i have told in what to get :handgestures-thumbup: :coffee:

Yep 95% is in the prep. If its not smooth before you get to the top coat its just going to highlight the rough bits and look worse.
You need to get stuck in and flat down the scratches and grooves. Also feather back the edges when rubbing them out, you dont want a big paint ridge that you have just made from flatting out a scratch.
Those wheels above I would have started with a soft worn out pad on a grinder. Be gentle. Then probably an orbital sander to really smooth and feather back the paint. Each time your moving onto finer abrasives to smooth out previous scratches. If there is a bad deep groove then body filler can fill those in if needed. Then switch over to wet and dry say 360 grit just on the rough bits, followed by 800 grit. Dry and apply your primer then move up to 1200 grit. If you can see marks and scratches then more rubbing back will be needed and prime again.
Apply time, patience, graft, feel for ridges and marks and use your eyes. If the finished last primer coat looks spot on then your chances of having a nice top coat are much higher.

Just like Mm I am not planning this anytime soon but its good to know what i need in order to make a start. I have a grinder and an orbital sander so i just need to get a good range of sanding discs. I had no idea that i would have been able to take out scratches and gouges with just this I had thought some sort of grinding and welding or metal filling would have been required…. a job for another time but all good info :text-goodpost: :text-thankyouyellow:
