simple plating over?

Postby talisman » Wed May 04, 2016 8:35 pm

I have tin worm on both rear arches , and some where they attatch to the sills. Its not the end of the world yet and i have started to patch up with fibreglass and filler.I will layer up with the fibreglass and when finished will look fine. However i know its better to have new metal welded .
To be honest i would be perfectly happy with someone cutting out the old and welding plates straight on top of the good steel. In other words i want it sound and am not really woriied what it looks like. I can then fill and paint myself. For me body shops are overkill.Im not looking for perfection ,am i alone in thinking this way lol.

Depends where you go and who you use,, but what you are doing is sweeping it under the carpet to become a even bigger issue and problem.

I know but i simply cant afford at the moment.
I have finished the repairs and primed, now to top coat.
Its going to be awkward to blend in and i really dont want any hard paint lines.
Im considering a pinstripe/coachline running the body length?
This would be fitted after painting to a masked edge, works on boats lol.

In one breath you say your not worried about what it looks like. Then you waste time improving the cosmetics with filler and fibreglass because you cannot afford a pro to weld it.

This makes no sense at all to me in wasting time in hiding a problem that still exist.

Are you doing this patching to sell it on?

No mate im keeping it?
You are taking this to seriously lol.
I enjoy bodywork, nothing wrong with a bit of glass and filler.
Pro repairs ,not for me,dont like pro prices.
I will do the work myself with help from people who still do a good job but charge reasonable prices.
When i say dont care what it looks like im referring to the welded plate.
I want a good weld ,not to worried about butt/square plating as overplating is fine.

I get doing it yourself and that is what we are about, but there is doing it right yourself and masking up a problem that will come back a bite your ar*e big time, do it right first time and correct and forget about it, i have been doing this 25 years with these roadsters and classics before these hit the market and still use the guys that know their area re body repairs, i want mine done and not see or feel the need to go back to it in the near future, as i just see it as wasting time and effort, i have no intention of any of mine going to be leaving Wayne mansion very soon, i understand the budget, as we all have them and to be honest these are great budget cars, pro's charge what they are worth to do the job correct, but prices vary, we deal with who we trust and know and pass that info on.

Can we see pics of the said repair, as to be dead honest it does sound like you are covering over issues and bodging it up, and this will not help in the long run if this pocket rocket is a keeper and means a lot to you,i understand this is all about cost and if you have a welder, do it right as that tin worm behind those plates are still eating her away you have not cured anything, it is a b*ll sh*t repair, and when it blows out again it will be a major cost and work,,,or scrap.
We are all here for owners like yourself, whether attacking these at home on the drive or need help from a time served pro, but we will also be honest, and it does sound like a blow over co*k up, what worries me is what else you are cutting back on?
