Mk 1 gearbox filler plug wrench

Postby Mazda Mender » Sun Nov 24, 2013 5:23 pm

I have been trying to find a Mk 1 gearbox filler plug wrench/spanner for a while now and with it being square plus where it is for space and also the age from the last time any of these would have been cracked from the last oil change is not a easy task.
Most just get a open 14mm spanner and struggle and can make the square head round making it a problem for the likes of others to crack it, so i dug out a spare 14mm comp spanner flat and round ends and made my own, and it works a treat , slots on correct and long enough to be clear of everything to crack that little sh*t :handgestures-thumbup:  made it sssoooooo much less hassle....
Any way sorry it is not polished up for the photos going to send it to ian to play with  and can you tell it is home made :laughing-rolling: , thought others might be interested, let me know if you need measurments.

:handgestures-thumbup:
Nice one. This is why I haven't done my gearbox oil I can't get the pig open with the short 14mm spanner. Was thinking of buying these

Then use the longer ratchet or breaker bar?

The crow feet will come in handy else where and that is how i have done it for years, but wanted something solid to use everytime for just that job.
Total cost for the tool was a couple of £'s which will be used a lot and for many years yet.

You will definitely use it way more than me so worth the effort and few quid.... Think I might still go for the crows feet just to have.

What about this as an option:http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B005CMZVKA?keywords=14mm%20square%20socket&qid=1437092635&ref_=sr_1_54&sr=8-54. The T bar wouldn't give much leverage but with the addition of a piece of iron pipe it should do the job.

I am not sure there is the space for that :confusion-confused: (one of the other guys here will know better) and even then if the plug is anything like mine was you are not going to have enough leverage to get it off..... mine was a pig when I was on the ground but once up on a ramp it was a breeze...... :handgestures-thumbup:

I got a friend to weld a cut open end 14mm spanner to a cut 17mm ring spanner. I did not close the openender but will do when I get time.

It is handy to do Mk2 and Mk3 sump plugs, and 5 speed boxes for Mk1 through to the Mk3 5 speeder.

I have used it around 6 times and you get a bit extra torque on the sump plug and lots more on the 14mm square.

Great idea Wayne.

What is the use of the 21mm long spanner.

Sorry Eddy
I made up two 21mm long spanners..they are for undoing and removing the top front back wishbone nut and bolt..as they are a pain to get into and short ones don't cut it to get some grrrrr when it as not been touched gor 20 odd years...makes it easier as you have more force and can scissor action them with being on the bolt and nut and not having to make love to the wheel arche having to remove one..i'ved used them loads since i posted.....sooooooool much easier...the simple ideas are always the best and my best tools are the ones that i have made...

A 14mm socket from these might work and i am sure with a search on the bay of e etc you can find them easier and cheaper to get, unsure about the clearance under there with a socket and breaker bar? as it is not the biggest and easiest of areas to work in , but will get one and test...

Tried to buy one but they will only sell through their agents.

I got quoted £50 retail but none of the agents I contacted were interested in ordering one of these for a punter.
