This is a great bit of kit for the home machanic, and he also as plenty more bits to make life with fetttling a lot easier, you will need an electric drill and add the attachment supplied if you do not want to do it by hand, and somewhere to store it when not in use, this one is the adjustable version, so with a little spannering you can make it wider if needed for other makes of cars, you will also need to get or make some small run on ramps about 2" high( he does sell some) so you can slide this unit under the Mx/Roadster or a lowered car, so for that only it gets a 8 out of 10.

8 out of 10

Hi All,

Sorry for dragging up an old old thread, but found it on google and thought it'd be best to ask here as it is very relevant to my situation:

Firstly - does anyone know what sort of spec drill is required to lift a car on these tilt lifts? I've emailed CJAuto but not had a response. Some suggestions seem to say not to use an impact drill (understandable) and others hint at ~ 1000W drill is needed. Just want to get an idea of what drill I need to use as most of mine are < 550W.

Also, in the pictures it looks like blocks of wood have been placed on the tilt lift under the MX5 - why is this? Can the lift not be used by the sill lip?
Thanks!

As long as it is electric you should be fine ,a cordless is not upto the job.

Personal preference really for us, i don't like putting weight on the lip, as some jack up on them and is wrong...

Thanks for the response.

So where is the wood distributing the pressure? It doesn't look like the factory jacking points - is there anything under that wood that is structural?
Thanks! (Sorry if this is a numpty question, I don't have an mx5 yet so just making sure)

The jacking points are behind the lip, so the wood is on running from one jacking point to the other and across the floor pan so it is still also spreading the weight .

Like i say it is a personal thing as i have seen owners/garages lift Mazsters up on their sills and crushed them and in worse cases started to crush the sill itself with the metal being weak from the tin worm etc, if the Mazster is not in the best of conditions, the main jacking points can also be weak....i don't take the chance, as i have heard these sound like corn flakes being crushed to many times, and seen jacks etc go straght through the sills from tin worm or bad repairs when they plate up but don't replace the jacking point metal, and if i am going to working under one, i want the know that they are going to crumble on me while i am under them or near them.

The one I bought from Germany has longer plates, long enough to go almost full length of the sill.

The only problem I have is the lift wont slide under the car unless I drive her up onto the three inch blocks/mini ramps I made.

I agree with Wayne, better to be safe than sorry when lifting your pride and joy up.

Mate of mine has just bought four car ramps that lay almost flat to the ground, he drives his car on then lifts her up. Doesn't go as high as the 3in1 but he manages but he is a lot younger than me and more flexible!!!!!!
