Courtesy Light Mod Design - your input

Come and see what our Jon is up to, with his electric gizmos that his mind and hands mould into magic little boxes of tricks, he gets bored very easily, so if you have an idea that you can throw at him, all the better for him to play with ;0)

Courtesy Light Mod Design - your input

Postby binarypunk » Mon Apr 22, 2013 10:17 pm

Hi all...I'm working on my upcoming courtesy light mod which will convert the standard boring old on/off lights to full-on courtesy lights.

The interior lights will:
- Fade on when you open a door
- Stay on while a door is open and fade back on any time you open a door
- Pause a while after you close the door before fading off (how long should it wait?)
- Fade off immediately when you switch on the ignition (interrupts the pause)
- Fade on when the ignition is switched off and wait a while (how long?)
- Fade/stay on when the door is opened again to exit car
- Pause a while after you close the door again (could be a different length of pause to the first)
- Timeout and switch off lights if you leave a door open for x mins, to save the battery (how long?)

If you have central locking, it will:
- Fade on when you use remote unlocking
- Fade off immediately when you use remote locking (interrupts door-closed pause)

Optionally, it can connect to side/head lights for 'welcome light' and can:
- Switch on lights when you remote unlock
- Switch on lights to say goodbye? (don't know about this one)

Also thinking of adding a lights-left-on buzzer, but not sure.

Any opinions about the above or any other ideas greatly appreciated. Cheers guys.

I have this on my Mk 2 and Mk 1 with foot well lights and on the ignition barrel, which fades out after 30 seconds after the door is shut to make it easier to find the key hole, open the door and on solid again.
This is a great little mod and if you add in a lights left on alarm also, it's a winner.

Is 30s a good pause time for finding keys and whatnot? A minute maybe?

Would anyone connect it to side/headlights if it was possible? (for welcome light that is)

Question

Has anybody (or do you know of anyone that has) uprated their interior light bulbs to higher wattage, or added extra lights?
If so, do you have any opinion on the total wattage of lights that should be catered for? Catering for large currents is expensive, so keeping the limit down to a minimum is good, as long as most cars are catered for.

Most add LED bulbs which gives off a brighter light, as i have done, and in the foot wells and in the MK 2's in the dash blanks.

This mod will be able to fade the LED bulbs too. They should draw less current than filament bulbs...but it depends how many.

If you (anyone) have a moment and don't mind, if you could ground a door switch through a meter to see what current they draw, it would be really handy. I'm hoping to get away with a limit of 4A max. Standard mk1 lights should be just under 1A although I've not tested it yet.

I'm hoping 4A will be plenty enough for most people...

I use LEDs they give a nice white light, instead of the yellow light from filaments.

So far I have these specs...shout if any of them sound inadequate or wrong:

Total max power (current) of all interior lights = 48W (4A) - pretty much one mk1 headlight sort of power, surely enough...
Fade time = 2s
Delay time = 30s (to find your keys, sort out your handbag, etc) :-)
Timeout = 3mins (if you leave the door open, cuts power to save battery)

Remote unlock feature is proving to be a PITA due to various types and standards. I'm hoping it wouldn't be a deal breaker if it didn't do this...

This sounds pretty good, I will definitely be in line for one even if only for the 'lights on' warning. I'm assuming the kit have over-current protection (fuse or some smarter option) so if anyone is running something that draws greater than the necessary 48W I assume they could just add in a fused relay circuit and have your mod run that rather than run the lights directly. So I reckon your power handling is plenty.
