Hey i thought i would do a quick guide with pics of how to change the gearbox oil and diff oil this is on my mk2 6 speed but to be honest the mk1 and the 5 speeds are fairly similar also :)
ok tools you will need are a 24mm + 23mm socket and ratchet and a homebrew filling system (look below )
firslty jack up your car or put your car on ramps you need to try and make the car as level as possible lucky for me i have a slanted driveway so it was not to hard to get level.
This is the spirit level on the sill below
Now locate the drain and refill plugs on the gearbox these are on the passenger (near/side) side of the gearbox.
the drain plug is NOT THE BOLT WITH THE TORX it is the one that requires a 24mm socket to undo if you undo the torx bolt the world will stop and we will all die !! fact!
Ok now all your gearbox fluid has all drained clean up the magnetic drain plug and get all the filings off it , these are pretty normal so don't worry .

Make sure you remember to put the drain plug in and Here is the fun bit and the bit you need a homebrew filler or some kind of pump (i chose the homebrew "shitfiller3000") this compromised of a hosepipe a funnel and a smaller pipe to fit into the fill plug hole and some duck tape. What i did was route the pipe through the engine bay into the gearbox and had a friend put about 500ml in at a time and wait for it to drain through until the correct amount was in the gearbox, have a spare tub incase of any spillage when you remove the pipe from the gearbox.
Now once this is done put the fill plug back in and hey presto the gearbox is done .. now for the diff :)
I used 75w 90 but I've heard others using 80w 90 .

one other thing about the 6 speed box before i talk about the diff there is two other screws people remove by accident while refilling this will also destroy your geabox its another torx one and a ~14mm?further up towards the front these are on the driver side (off/side) in the picture marked red below .. one other maintenance thing when the oil is drained is to check the condition of the reverse switch marked blue , you can unscrew this and check that the press switch is working and not jamming or grinding .

Ok now for the diff , yet again you will need the same tools ratchet and 23mm -24mm socket and the homebrew shitfiller3000
this is a mega easy job (when you squirt both bolts with wd40 the day before)
undo the bottom drain bolt on the diff 24mm should do it and let all the oil drain out then re-install the drain plug.
once you have done this its time to refill so undo the fill plug just up to the right (as in picture below) which in most diffs is a 23mm socket if not it should be a 24mm. now insert the shitfiller3000 into the fill hole and start filling (i fill diffs until the oil starts to overflow out of the fill plug and thats about spot on how much you need )
it about 2-2.5 ltrs for the gearbox and about 1ltr for the diff
to follow is a guide on checking and replacing oil in turret but for the moment i cannot do this due to the rubber on my turret being in a very bad condition and in need of replacement.
if your gearstick to turret seal looks like this do not fill with oil , replace seal then fill or it will just seep out causing a mess on the drive :)

As yours is a 6 speed you don't have any turret oil as the linkage is lubricated from the gearbox oil. Also, you could have filled the gearbox via the turret

So, mine is a 6 speed 2.5, if I get a new turret rubber, take out the old one, drain from underneath, clean and replace drainage plug, remove filler plug (so I can see when full), I can then pour the new oil in through the turret until dribbles out filler hole below. Replace rubber at turret, replace filler plug and job done.

i used 75w 90 but ive heard others using 80w 90 woukd not have thought there is enough heat in the uk to justify 80w90
