Re: My '91 V-Special
Wow, what a difference. I cannot believe the change from the before to the after. Hopefully on my 48k miler, 51 plate I will have a long time to wait before I need that level of restoration, but it did give me an idea/question. How easy would it be to swap the covering from the drivers to the passengers seat, thereby starting to even out wear?
Great job.
Great job.

Re: My '91 V-Special
Sure, be glad to M-m - I'll try and get it done over the weekend I think, I can go into a bit more detail then.
And thanks for the kind comments chaps, got a lot of good info off here so it will be good to be able to put something back.
Barnie - I would say it sounds like quite a lot of work to swap coverings. Might be a good idea to just keep the leather well conditioned then it would hopefully be less likely to crack in the first place? Though that might not help with typical side bolster wear. My seats have got another 61,000 miles and a few years on yours I think, so you should be good for a while

Re: My '91 V-Special
OK, finally got round to making and fitting some stap-style door pulls to my car. I've always quite fancied some of those, combined with the later style door cards with the pockets, but haven't found any I really like. There are actually some lovely Nakamae JDM ones, but at $239 from Rev9 Autosport a bit out of my price range and I don't really like some of the cheaper black ones you can get. So I found some flight case handles on eBay that were the perfect size, covered them in leather and fitted them along with some later door cards off eBay too:
Pleased with that, doubly so in that with delivery the handles were just over ÂŁ6, add a leather off cut for ÂŁ3, bit of silver paint and glue - under a tenner the pair
I can do a quick how to if anyones interested in more details.
Definitely a bit of a retro theme seems to be emerging for my car, but trying to keep everything to bolt ons and buying s/h bits to work on so I can revert to standard if I want in the future.

Thanks Jay (and all) As Dave says, the strap type door handles do make quite a difference to the amount of room you have. Good mod to do. The retro look suits the mk1 IMO.

Re: My '91 V-Special
AS I was fitting my newly detangoed lights back in, I realised that my nosecone / bumper has slots cut out that I've not seen on others - presumably for brake cooling. There's nothing behind them but that doesn't look great, maybe some ducting would help. Hmm. Anyone know if any had this as standard? Or if I've got an aftermarket or altered nosecone? Looks standard in all other respects. Just curious

Re: My '91 V-Special
Not done an update for a while, mostly as not much has happened to the car with work and Christmas getting in the way. I fitted my Jass grille and also fitted some matching aluminium mesh to the two cutouts in my bumper to finish them off a bit. Still don't know if they were the work of a previous owner or if it is some aftermarket bumper i have. Also aligned my barn doors which looks loads better, thanks to a timely comment from Jon on another thread. Was wondering how you did it.
Photo doesn't show the jass grille, but it looks good and will hopefully protect the radiator. All this mesh on the front of the car is giving me the desire for some Jass Classic TSIs to balance it all out, think they might look pretty good. Hmmm.
Someone has obviously bashed my number plate plinth as it is pretty well cracked /smashed up now and was fine before the weekend. Still, I hate the thing anyway and have some brackets on order to fit it at the bottom of the mouth which I think looks lots better. Another job.
