Auto gearbox oil

Postby dmt » Wed Apr 23, 2014 4:54 pm

Hi, I am finding it difficult to check the oil level on my Mk1 1.6 auto as when the dip stick is withdrawn after following the check procedure there is not a defined line where the level is. Is this normal or does this indicate the oil needs replacing, the oil does not look too dirty. Dave.

It looks like it is picking up oil from the tube which is giving a false reading and is different on both sides of the dipstick.

Let her sit over night, engage/go through all the gears and then dip it.

Sucked some oil out with oil extraction pump and it is a dark red colour so think I will suck the rest out and fill with new oil, did i read once you recommend not to disturb the filter unless absolutely necessary? Dave.

If the oil is not a brown colour and does not smell ,then leave it be is the rule of thumb with an auto.
