1.6 brake upgrade

Postby madmanstiff » Mon Jun 23, 2014 3:53 pm

Hi guys I've been looking to upgrade my brakes on my 1.6 mk1 to the 1.8 brakes. I've found the 1.8 mounting brackets on ebay but not the calipers I was wondering if the 1.8 brakes use the same calipers but just mounted further out to compensate for the lager disk or if it is a complete Change over.
Cheer for any help you can give.

I reckon the 1.8 calipers are different. But I am guessing a little ... I'm currently looking to buy one for my 1.6 and I'm seeing 1.8 specific calipers advertised...

That said, I'm sure someone who actually knows for sure will reply soon enough.

I'm purely looking for the cheapest way of doing it and as I've seen so many listing for the carriers alone I just wondered if there was any reason behind it as it would cut the cost if doing it in half.

Hi folks I am doing the same and from what I have read you need the 1.8 carriers, new discs and pads, bend or trim back the dust covers (to accommodate the bigger discs) and use the same calipers.
Autolink do an upgrade kit with all the parts and it doesn't include calipers.
We should compare notes when we start... :confusion-confused:

You re-use the 1.6 callipers, you need the 1.8 carriers, and you fit them swap sided,
I:E you fit the drivers side to the passenger and visa versa, the mud shield will need trimming, then simply add 1.8 disks and pads and your good to go :)

Just thought as an afterthought I only have standard 14 inch steelies im guessing bigger wheels will be needed to accommodate the bigger brakes? Seems like a stupid question but would rather know sooner than later.

Good job. My carriers arrived today as well. As far as wheel size is concerned I know there is an issue with the larger sport brakes but I am not sure about the 1.8 brakes.
I can tell you a friend of mine runs a 1.8 with daisies so you might be fine. The guys here will no doubt tell you as they are well familiar with them.
Good luck and take plenty of pics for us coming behind you. :coffee:
