waterpump/cambelt etc replacement howto?

Postby sandmonster » Mon Jan 04, 2016 1:23 pm

Is there a comprehensive howto for this on here - have had a little search but not come across it?

I'm gearing up to replace my thermostat housing (leaky t-piece) and will check/replace everything else that I can while I'm 'in there'. Could do with a comprehensive list of jobs/bits and any hints/tips that aren't likely to be in the Haynes book.

Also recommendations on the bits - I note MX5parts do a 'ultimate' kit http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/camshaft-timi ... -3328.html but it has a pattern waterpump?

Also my 1992 Eunos wont be 'early crank' in the options for that kit will it - how do I tell?

:text-thankyouyellow: in advance. :handgestures-thumbup:

The Short nose Crank has 4 "slots" in the pulley whereas the long nose crankshaft has 8 "slots".
I think there is only about a ÂŁ20 difference in water pumps between aftermarket and genuine so that's a choice for you.
I bought the kit from mx5 parts but asked for a genuine cam cover gasket as the pattern ones are not the same quality.

This looks like a place to start - seems to skip some bits, but fairly comprehensive... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwaHeAPd14A

This one does the seals too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gtZEUnnZYyI

Another one with some more bits: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2hLuUi32UgY

And this one lots of good tips - love the guy's hat - I think Wayne should have a similar one ;) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oovptq0q7vc

Hi Wayne,

Not doing it for a few weeks - need some dry-ish weather forecast LOL

Just doing some background research and building up a list of stuff to order.

So far I have:

  1. Timing belt kit (Belt, tensioner, idler & spring)
  2. Water pump with gaskets
  3. Thermostat housing (got 2nd hand one - pipe is a little rusty, but do I buy new, or do the brass t-piece mod?)
  4. Thermostat housing gasket
  5. Thermostat with gasket
  6. Rocker cover gasket
  7. Antifreeze
  8. maybe cam seals
  9. maybe crank seal
  10. maybe hoses?
  11. CAS o-ring
  12. alternator belt - just changed
  13. power steering belt - just changed

So you can re-use the crank bolt, two 1" open spanners and a locking tool, and if needed torque wrench's.

Just about to do this too! Does the thermostat not need to come off then? Might as well not buy the housing O ring if not.
