What to do with my mx5?

Postby sosaysjay » Thu Mar 17, 2016 6:53 pm

Hello forum people,

Wondered if I might get some advice. If so, great! If not, ok. Maybe writing this out will be cathartic :-)

OK.. so I have a mk1 mx5 (1.6 1993 red) which I'm not using, and haven't used for about 6 months or more.

Because I no longer require a car, and I'm not in position to have one I don't use.. ideally I'd sell it. Which brings me to consider what it would fetch.

What complicates things (for me) is that it could do with a few things done to it first, or I'd require a buyer who wants to do a few things themselves (how much stuff, depends on perspective..)

So I'm looking at two options: Spending money to make the car "nice" and sell it for whatever the market prices such a car at, OR selling the car in its current condition. I've no idea which option is best for me (£££).. only which one requires the least effort (!)

Any advice to help decide would be hugely appreciated.

Here's the details:

Mechanically, it's straight. The only issues being from lack of use: the battery is flat, and I suspect the handbrake has ceased a little. But otherwise she's fine. It's clean in there, having done less than 70,000 miles. She's MOT'd and ready to go.

Rust wise, I don't think there is any (!) — when I bought it 2-3 years ago, I took it to Doctor MX5 to get her checked out, and he said it was a very clean car underneath (sills etc) and advised me to get it undercoated (which I did.) I know that rusty sills is pretty common and something you always try to avoid. So on that score, along with the engine, this is a great car.

However, it's the paintwork that requires attention. There are two areas where the lacquer is coming off :-( So that's clearly a turn off for a buyer, and I imagine something that would cost quite dearly to put right?

Beyond that, the interior is clean. Hood is good. Passenger electric window needs fixing. Door mirrors are an aftermarket kind, which I don't like much.

So yeah.. there you go.

What would be a fair price for such a proposition in its current state?

And if I were to spend the money to get the paint done, which I've no idea on the cost, where would the price be then?

I looked around (ebay, autotrader) and the prices are all over the place. Some are crazy high! Result being, I didn't get a feel for what's realistic.

Cheers forum people,

Jordan

Hello Jordan. I'm no expert mate. But I have recently bought an MX5 so had a look at a few recently. I would say that if you have a rust free mk1 then that's a bonus. I recently took another car to Chips Away to have a big scratch taken out. They sprayed one panel and blended into two others which cost £300. It looks good but I would say that I could have had it done cheaper. They also could have put me in touch with a guy who could give the car a polish for £50.

Other than that I would say that service history and number of owners matters a lot to buyers who are after a car to own long-term.

I would suggest first and foremost pop some pictures up on the menders site so we can have a look see, good bits, bad bits (we love pictures) then see what offers come in.

If she is rust free as stated then I am sure with the given mileage there will be a mender who either wants it for themselves or know someone who is looking for one.

I would love another to play with and make a few alterations, mine is almost bog standard and that's the way I want to keep her, being a 1991 1.6 with 53000 miles on the clock.
1993 1.6 Eunos Roadster (gone)
1998 UK Mk 2 1.6 (gone)
2003 1.8 SVT Sport (shouldnt have sold it)
1991 1.6 Eunos Roadster with a bit of bling.

Life is a journey, best travelled topless in an MX5!!

Appreciate the replies so far. Cheers.

It's interesting to know it cost £300 to spray a panel. I wondered if £500 would cover both affected areas on my car, as a rough guess. And maybe that's realistic depending on who did it.. (I imagine prices vary hugely.)

Regarding mileage, I don't have any service history. Anyone buying it would be wise to buy on condition and make of the mileage what they will (like I did!) I personally very much doubt any one has fiddled the mileage, but without service history what can I say. When I bought the car I cared more about finding one that had no rust. I had no illusions about finding a collectors item :-)

If I was to advertise the car for £750 as it currently stands, would that sound reasonable, too low, or?..

If its in good nick and got decent MOT then I would say that £750 sounds towards the low end to me. You can always check the mileage on the DVLA MOT site which is an indicator of genuine mileage. Like blackyb says, it would be interesting to see some pics..

1. Get a new battery, a running car will fetch more money than a non starter.
2. Adjust the handbrake and possibly give the brakes a once over. Always a good selling point.
3. Fix the electric window, a replacement unit is cheap(ish). Speak to Andrew at Autolink (use the mazda menders discount code and get a 9.5% discount).
4. You could replace the door mirrors by either swapping them with someone or just getting a 2nd hand set and selling these with the car (or separately). Again, speak to Andrew at Autolink.
5. Red cars never had lacquer from the factory. Leave the paint as is. Since the car is quite good (from what you described) the next owner may even get a full respray/ colour change done.
6. £750 is low even as is. Maybe get everything fixed and ask between £1000-1200ish.
1. A car is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it, 2. Resale wont save your life in an accident, 3. Genius has limits, stupidity has none, 4. Never argue with an idiot, they will bring you down to their level & beat you with experience, 5. Growing old beats the alternative -- dying young!

Cheers people, this has been helpful.

I do have a print out of prior MOT's mileage, and it all fits.

The car wants a good clean, and then I'll grab some photos.

And "storm" — your 6 pointer advice is gold. I'll sort the battery out, and make sure the brakes are ok, and then either sell it as it is from there, or if I feel more adventurous I can begin to resolve the other issues... but leave the paint alone as you suggest (I have decided I'm not going to spend that kind of money on this car as I'm not going to enjoy the benefit of it..)

IMHO if there is no MOT and a few faults no one will give you £700.

You will never get the painting money back.

Cheapest battery you can find and secure and do the minimium to get an MOT and nothing that would cost just to give you a warm feeling.

Must be worth £1k at least then but do the minimium to get an MOT, not what you would like to do.

Hi Eddie,

Car has MOT (until September) - no advisories when done last year.

Cheers for the advice, I think you're right to not do anything for a "warm feeling" :-)
