Now bear in mind...this car is on axle stands all round...so no tyres soaking up vibrations. Interior rattles - nothing is screwed down and binnacle is loose - passenger door, half shut and rattles around 1500rpm when looking at interior...

I have to say. I am so pleased now with the engine. I can continue with the rest of the car now putting all the refurbed parts back together and spraying it...

Change default setting from 360 to HD...it's much better :)

Get some fuel in her
I like this fix Ian, need to speak to you, i am thinking a cordless angle drill might help while the thermostat housing is still conected to the engine? water pump out let pipe is easy to remove to get it on the bench to repair/fix .

There was a twofold reason for doing this Ben...1 to see if it worked and 2 to recommend this as a permanent fix. This really is solid as a rock - it actually feels like it is part of the housing now, won't corrode and is not flimsy enough to be resistant to the odd knock.

Even if I bought a second hand unit, I would do this now as there is no telling when that would give way.

I am going to do a full how to.... plus it is a cheap fix.

There was also another reason and that is to test it to do the same job on the outlet with the right angled pipe as Wayne alluded to.

The method can be improved to make it a quick job too.

Just a point about using a reamer. Using a drill bit - whilst it will drill a hole, this is never perfectly round, a reamer is designed to make a perfect equal hole, which is ideal for tapping. The method to improve this is to drill out with a right angled drill...moving the p/s pump out the way then reaming it to 8.5mm...then tapping to 1/8 bsp.

Took everything out the engine bay again and finished wiring tuck. Cleaned up and put all the bits back in....and the old washer bottle (for now).

Decided (finally) on the paint so ordered it before I changed my mind. Ordered the new stripes, the new roundels (again) the new numbers (again)...some other bits too. Strip down begins and getting ready to paint....

Just because I like the sound, I fired it up again....cold start, single turn of key...and even 1500rpm cold start it sounds like a purring kitten. Stripping down the HLA's, cleaning them to as new and flushing the galleries with a syringe the and putting back together and doing the timing has got to be the best thing I have done to this car....
