Today I was going to paint the wings, but it was raining heavy and I thought too much damp in the air,(plus I am worried it turns crap so scared to do it ha ha)
So I did the daisy wheels instead, cleaned them all up with a rotary wire brush and a small hand scraper for to get in the corners, primed and painted, I`ll laquer them tomorrow. Shamed myself by having to buy wheel paint and some more red rattle cans for the wings. Now I am Ā£24.00 down sigh!
I painted the inside of the wings with primer and an old tin of red smoothrite I had to give a bit extra protection.
Tomorrow is supposedly the best day for weather of the week so ill have a go at the wing paint. Wish me luck.

Well the wing spraying went much better than I thought, I surprised myself!
I put 4 coats of colour on each, ill leave now to harden then rub down with 1200 wet and dry and laquer.

I also a couple of weeks ago, cut out and repaired the rear sill/wing that was starting to rust, the inner sill was good so I made up repair panels and welded them in, I didn't take pics at that point, but I skimmed with filler and painted today, heres pics of that plus the finished wheels. laquer the front wings tomorrow and should be back on the road next week.

I didn't like sanding my nice shiny wings with 1200 before spraying with laquer, but I did, put on two coats and its not as nice as before, but ill t cut or g3 or something when it hardens.
The wing repair sections I welded in don't quite line up, but I will live with that ok. The nose cone put up a fight but I got it all fitted in the end, refitted all the lights and we are back on the road. I am happy in the knowledge that its solid underneath now and should last a good few more years.
I need to paint the sills black under the front and rear wings, then a good cut and polish.
It never will be a show winner but its a great useable old car.

My electric mirrors came this morning, straight to the test bench to check wheather my gambol had paid off and they were working.
I researched online and found a page from an American site with labelled wiring for the mirrors, you just had to reverse it as their drivers mirror is our passenger one. Firstly I cut off the old poorly attatched extension wiring and started to wire up to the switch.

I had an old fiat fuse box, so I wired the switch up via that and connected the mirrors up one at a time, on connecting the live the mirror motors whirred into life, both work fine. woohoo!! , knowing this, I`ll get them rubbed down and paint them. The hole centres are the same as the manual ones so they should just bolt straight on, I think ill only need to drill a hole for the wire to go through.
When I have painted them I`ll write up how to fit them when I figure that out. But the main thing is they work. I am not going to strip them down to paint them I think I should be able to just mask them off to do it.

There are two types of switch ive found for the mk1 mazda, ive managed to get the mirrors working properly on the bench with both switches, I haven't decided which one to use for mine, or where to put it yet, but anyway here are where the wires go.

I think this is called the jdm switch.
looking at the picture your looking at the back of the switch.
starting from the top right and going clockwise
blue wire,
black wire
brown/yellow
brown/black
green/black
brown
light green.

My mirrors didn't have a plug on them but I did know that the blue wire from the switch was to positive side of the battery (live) and the black was earth(neg)
I found an American wiring diagram and all colours were the same apart from one. so I fiddled a bit and got them working.
one note, the brown wire is common to both mirrors so I plan to solder another wire onto this at the back of the plug to make one go to each mirror.

The mirrors themselves have three wires each, passenger side one (u.k) has white/black, green/red, and black.
drivers side again(u.k) white/black, green, black/green

for the drivers mirror
from the switch
green/black goes to green/black
brown goes to green
brown/black goes to white/black

for the passenger mirror
from the switch
green goes to black
brown/yellow goes to white/black
brown goes to green/red

this worked perfectly for me, remember the all brown wire form the switch goes to both mirrors so join it at the back of the switch.
The live wire (blue) is meant to come from the cigar fuse to give it the correct protection from the fuse. I`ll post this now and write the other switch up in a minute.

This is the other type switch, I had the jdm switch, but bought one of these on ebay for Ā£8 inc post, if you buy a switch make sure it has the plug on the back.

Looking at the back of the plug and starting in the top right corner and going clockwise,
black wire
blue wire
light green/red
light green
brown/yellow
brown/black
brown.

At this point I should say that I don't know which way up this switch goes, so ive marked UP on it the way I think. if mounted the other way round then the right mirror would become left and probably work in reverse.
so with the switch this way up, the wiring goes thus.

drivers side mirror
from the switch
green/red goes to black
brown goes to green
brown/black goes to white/black.

passenger side mirror
from the switch
green goes to black
brown goes to green/red
brown/yellow goes to white/black.

as with the other switch the brown wire from the switch goes to both mirrors, therefore I will solder another wire to the brown at the back of the switch and have one go to each mirror.

I still need to paint my mirrors red, then fit to the car, I was thinking of using the jdm switch and mounting it where the imobiliser goes, then move the imobileser, but I might yet use the other switch and put it beside the bmw clock. I don't know yet.
one more thing I found out today, Halfords are going to discontinue the mazda su red in rattle cans, I`ll have to buy a compressor now.
hope the wiring helps you out if anyone else wants to retro fit some leccy mirrors.

just a quick reminder to disconnect your battery before doing any electrical work. I always found it best to check things out on the bench first, then when you put it in the car you know its gonna work ok.

rubbed down the mirrors today, one surprise, I never realised the base was aluminium casting, better than plastic. I dry rubbed inside where the mirrors were so as not to get water in there. ready for paint hopefully this week sometime.

Not much done , I have masked off and primed the mirrors, and I have moved the immobiliser switch. I am going to use the jdm switch as I think it fits in better and looks better than the other.
to move the immobiliser,i marked off a hole further down and chain drilled and cut it out, and filed it to 50.0mm by 28.0mm. I disconnected the battery, then cut the wires further back where there are only three, and fed the wires through the new hole, spliced them back in and soldered them, previously I had ran some heat shrink rap on the wire, this was then brought down over the join and heated to shrink over. I popped the switch in the new hole , re attatched the battery and checked the car started ok. it did. the jdm switch sits nicely in place, so now its a case of paint and fit the mirrors and wire them up.
