Ok, great idea. Cannot knock the technical bit and what it does and is made for, easy to use and does what it says on the tin....But...

This is nearly £50, with postage, so not cheap for what you get....

First impressions - the cardboard box packaging also doubles up as a storage box.
The instructions are nice and easy to follow. Looked at the bits bolted together stuck in Styrofoam to keep the exposed pins safe.
Lifting it out is nerve racking as it looks flimsy with everything on show so you are scared you might break something, which to me defeats the object it was designed for ...for use in a garage and around an engine bay where rough and ready, grease, oil and water come into play. This is far from being up to the task with the obvious lack of protection needed for its purpose.

It is very clear that this was designed off a MK 1 with the MK 2 being an after thought. When we tested it we found that there was loads of room to fiddle about and plug the tool into the diagnostic port on a MK1. Unlike the MK 2 where you need to fiddle a little to line up the pins to the port because of how close it is to the wing, which means the operation buttons become near impossible to use under the wing with the half inch gap it gives you to work with by using your little finger so the buttons for one need to be moved to the bottom for more ease of use.

Personally I feel that it should push down solid to the port rather than sitting proud of it simply to know it is all in and locked in place for use, or even better be on a cable to plug in. With the buttons moved to a better place for use instead of being obstructed by the MK 2's wing making things difficult to use. It does need protection, simply because of the environment for which it is intended. Feels fragile unfinished and should be used with anti static gloves on a red velvet cushion with tassels all the way around it for this delicate clever thing to do its job. The screen protection is flimsy and is only half stuck in place which is in the bracket of correct protection again and a proper safe storage case would not go amiss.

On the whole it does it's job very easy, but looks unfinished ,still in prototype mode that stopped just there with all the thought going into what it does and not carrying on to the full package it will be used for and where, cannot knock the technical behind it, hats off...but it is a shame it finished there.

Do I think it is worth the money,,,,,,,no...cheaper to just get a jumper and LED kit from Autolinkmx5 which will do the same job..

So I give it a 4 out of 10 ...... 4 because of what it does which it does well, loosing on the finishing( looking and feeling like it is still in protype/development which shockly it is not) and lack of after thought, tricky to use on a MK 2 and value for money.

I have bought one of these, from ebay for £39.99 + £2.99 postage.

I've recently bought my first '5, a 1991/2 NA Eunos 1600.

admittedly it looks to be unfinished with the circuit board & lcd screen exposed (maybe this was deliberate to give the 'look' of an experimental tool? probably more as its a short production run & probably will be updated when funds allow  )

out of the box it was easy to use, comparing the display to an LED flash-count for me is a no-brainer as I am dislexic and have concentration issues (counting a repeatedly flashing led causes lots of guesswork - I remember trying to 'guess' falut-codes on a Nissan Sylvia turbo I worked on over 20 years ago  if I remember the ecu was hidden behind the glovebox so not easily accessable with many reflective surfaces so not fun  )

to me its saved some swearing :handgestures-thumbup:

what do you get for £40 in comparison  generic obd2 readers are anywhere above £10, full dealer diagnostics are £££££££'s

Rich.

Thanks for your personal thoughts and imput Rich...

But Lets not get OBD/OBDI readers and OBDII mixed up....

OBDII( 2001 onwards....) readers are a different reader and start at a different year for diagnostic reading lets not get them confused, they would not work on your roadster ,and off the bay of e a blue tooth version can be picked up for a couple of pounds any way now.
If you are happy with your purchase, good i am sure he is happy to know you have lined his pocket for something that looks like it should be plugged into a mother board only.
My review is honest, you have used it once for that amount and tucked it into it's storage cardboard box, but as for using it a number of times as it should be made for ? ( i hope for that price), it is not upto the job, lack of protection with something this delicate around a working garage/home mechanics environment, liquids etc is not upto the job.. I see you have used it on a MK 1 , trust me on a Mk2 it is a ball ache , and i could see fatigue already starting on the pins after a couple of times testing it, i think it is great that it as helped you in this case with your dyslexia, i do think the idea of the tool and how it works is a great idea, and all credit to the chap that thought about it ... but it is a lot of money to be used once and wrapped up in cotton wool and bubble wrapped until you put on the white gloves to use it again gingerly , so that being the case besides your condition :bow-yellow: you might as well pay a couple of £'s and get the code book etc, get your flash codes, sort the issue and put it in the shelf until next time, big saving, same out come Not as scared to man handle them.
It needed and needs a lot more thought and development, it is not ready for the market .....this looks like a greed thing to rush it out to coin it in as it was half the price at the beginning, I am not knocking his knowledge on working this out tho,all credit to him.... but if that knowledge finished on building this and working it out/programming , then he should of seeked others knowledge on finishing it off rather than sending it out as finished still in prototype mode... it is very clear that it as not been fully tested before going out for sale re- the mk2 side..
As i said i think it is a great idea and all credit to working it out...but not up to the job on protection and after thought for the test of time, lot of money to be used once..

I have to agree with Mm, this could be a great must have tool for all Mk1 and early Mk2 owners, the designer /builder obviously has the knowledge and expertise to make this into what it should be, but it does need a bit of fettling and tidying up to make it the finished article.

If it was more robust and complete and suitable to be used on both models, it would be in my tool box asap.

This may be old news, but the product is no longer a bare PCB (and presumably some other changes) - I'm very happy with mine, makes certain tinkering tasks a lot easier.

It's a great bit of kit, the old flash test method was simple enough to use but this little gadget makes it all so simpler and offers you a number of self tests.

To me a little must have, and a nice little stocking filler at Christmas.
