How to fit and repair unlocking hood latches on the MK 1/2/2.5

Postby Mazda Mender » Sat Nov 02, 2019 2:19 pm

Sometimes something comes along that is a simple thing but solves a big issue, and thanks to Paul at Mx5fix.com and also sold through autolinkmx5, where they will sell you a new button or an exchange item saving you the fiddly job of changing the button yourself, so gone are the days of reshaping with a rubber hammer from wear or drilling out the old button and adding a small self tapper screw, these work and work better than good, i would even say they work better than the original button in locking up solid with a very nice click into the locked position....

Any way here is a quick walk through guide to follow if you have bought a new button to be replace, which is good with the MK 1 NA MK 2/2.5 NB/NBFL soft top and hard top top and side latches....

The worst ones that suffer from the age fatigue are the NB MK 2 and 2.5's from 1998 > 2005 as everything seems to be made of cheese, the Mk 1 latches do fair better and last a lot longer but some do succumb to the age and wear and tear process.

At last there is a good solid cheap solution and fix thanks to a chap called Paul ...thank you Paul.... :obscene-drinkingcheers: :bow-yellow:

Videos of the new button in action....

Now available through Autolinkmx5 from Paul at mx5solutions are the new locking latch buttons. These have been fully tested by Paul and myself, compounds changed and queries and questions answered, so you can now solve a annoying expensive issue, I for one am very impressed.

This guide will walk you through on how to swap the old dead button for a new one in detail, it is a very easy and quick solution...

Our envelope as arrived so open it up ready to swap the buttons....

So remove your unlocking latch from the soft top or hard top, top or sides, either with a phillips (early) or torx (late)

Turn the latch over, (As you can also see on this latch the guide nipple cover is split and we recommend that you need to replace that before refitting)...

And it is just a case of putting the blade end of the driver in one of the slots and levering, it does not need a lot of force, so watch where the clip goes and put safe for re-fitting...

Then turn the latch over keeping the button in place and re-insert the buttons hinge pin, you can put the latch down flat on the work top to help as all this can be a little fiddly, you might need at this point to push and shove things around to line up correct....
